Welcome to My Star Vacation Rentals! We presently have two of the most outstanding rentals in the ar That was understatement. John also loves to create stuff.

When we married 34 years ago John told me β€œWe may never be rich, but I promise you we will never be bored!”. Once in awhile, I confess, I just want to be a little bored. Life is always an adventure in our family. Recreating this home has been no exception. John loves to travel, and got me hooked. So even though we are both native Utahns, we try and see some part of the world every chance we get. A

Most people who visit southern Utah in winter or early spring have no idea the Milky Way galactic core is not even visible during those months.

It sits below the horizon during dark hours from November through March. Beautiful skies still, but the full spread most people are imagining is not there. 🌌

April through October is your window to see the Milky Way, and the best individual nights are the ones that fall closest to a new moon.

If you want to know exactly what the sky will look like when you come and what to look for, I have left something useful in the first comment. πŸ‘‡

🐢 Traveling southern Utah with a dog takes a little more planning than most people expect, but the payoff is worth it.

The national park trails are mostly off limits for dogs, but the areas around the parks, and right here in Kanab, are a different story entirely. 🐾

Jackson Flat Reservoir, Red Hollow Slot Canyon, and Coral Pink Sand Dunes are all dog friendly and each one is worth the trip on its own.

Does it really get dark where you live? πŸ€”

Kanab itself sits at a Bortle 4 on the sky darkness scale. That already puts you ahead of most places people can drive to.

But the land just outside of town drops to a Bortle 2. That is the same rating as Bryce Canyon. 🌌

A Bortle 2 means the Milky Way is bright enough to cast a faint shadow on the ground. John and I thought that was something everyone had seen. Turns out we were wrong.

Have you ever seen that? Leave us a comment and let us know!

πŸ”A lot of people think you need a telescope to really see the night sky out here. You do not.

What you actually need is twenty minutes away from any light source and your phone face down on the blanket. πŸ“΅

John and I have been stepping outside on clear nights for years and never get tired of the view. No equipment required.

But, for those not as familiar with this sky as we are, we have something special up our sleeve for you in the first comment πŸ‘‡

All five national parks in southern Utah carry dark sky certification, but each one offers something completely different after dark.

Choosing the right one depends on whether you want ranger programs, total solitude, wide-open photography, or something you simply cannot see anywhere else on the planet.

Swipe through for a quick breakdown of each one, and we’ll let you in on a little secret. From Kanab you can easily access 4 out of 5.

πŸ‘€ John has been watching the calendar for months, and this August is something worth paying attention to.

The Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of August 12 into the early hours of August 13, and this year that falls on a new moon. 🌠

That means zero lunar interference at the exact moment the shower hits its strongest. The American Meteor Society puts the expected rate at around 100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions.

Those dates go fast around here. Check the first comment if you want to be here for it. πŸ‘‡

There is a spot right on the edge of Kanab with a Bortle 2 sky rating, the same as Bryce Canyon, and almost nobody knows it is there. πŸ”

Jackson Flat Reservoir has wide-open views in every direction, restrooms on site, and you can pull up, spread a blanket, and have the whole sky to yourself.

No permit. No fee. No crowd.

If you want to be close enough to walk back to a real bed when you are done, check the first comment for how to book a stay right here in town. πŸ‘‡

Most people plan their southern Utah trip around the parks, the trails, and the kids' school calendar. πŸ“…

The moon is usually not part of that conversation at all, and it should be. πŸŒ™

A full moon washes out the Milky Way almost as much as city lights, and it can happen without anyone realizing it until they are already here.

Swipe through for a few things worth knowing before you book, and grab our Kanab local guide in the first comment for more of what we have learned after years of living under this sky.

🌠Have you ever seen stars like this?

John and I stepped outside last Tuesday to take out the trash and ended up standing in the dark for a good twenty minutes just staring up. 🌌

That is the thing about living out here. You never really get used to it.

We just walk outside. That is all it takes. And if you have never really seen a full night sky before, this is the place to find out what you have been missing.
