The Story Behind the "10/6" Tag
The holiday's date is a clever, literal interpretation of the slip of paper tucked into the hat band of the character drawn by English illustrator Sir John Tenniel in Lewis Carroll's classic 1865 novel, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. [
• The Original Meaning: In Victorian England, "10/6" was a price tag. It meant the top hat cost 10 shillings and 6 pence (or about half a guinea).
• The Digital Twist: In 1986, a group of computer technicians in Boulder, Colorado realized that 10/6 looked exactly like a date format (Month/Day). They established October 6th as a theme day for lighthearted, tech-breakout silliness, and by 1988, it had gained national press coverage.
