Taku River Reds

Here is with a Dolly Varden he caught several years back when I tricked him into going fly fishing. If you are in the middle of America, anywhere nearby January 29 I’d love to see you at a rad dinner Hank is conjuring up that with fish we caught by nets, traps, and baited hooks but not fly fishing with bears.

I know we haven’t posted in a minute so here are some fun shots from last season.

The Taku River cohos are in!

One advantage of picking massive sets through the night is that you sometimes get to see some amazing sunrises.

The crew on your favorite gillnet boat found some salmon this week and we even got to be home for the 4th for the first time in years.

Sometimes things don’t quite go to plan and last week that meant a broken drum meaning we had to hand haul the net and head in for repairs. But now we are the proud owners of new pillow bearings and some dandy weld repairs on our net hauler so we can get back out there Sunday to get in front of some more of those beautiful salmon to feed the people. Back on the grind.

What does a 20 pound box of salmon fillet portions look like? About like this. The FDA recommends at least 8oz of seafood per week so one box would be about enough for one person for 40 weeks.

Something we do differently than most is that we cut the heads off, take the guts out, pressure bleed, and belly ice the fish on the boat on the boat as they come aboard. This means we spend our time cleaning fish while the net is in the water which is whole lot more work while we are on the water but the result is the best Wild salmon available anywhere. Order yourself on up a batch and be the back yard grill hero this summer. If you want a bunch of salmon heads, we could probably do that too.
