How do you coach what your QB didn’t see—so he never misses it again?
Watching the rep isn’t the same as seeing the rep again.
You can show a QB exactly what he missed on film. You can point to the safety. Circle the rotation. Explain why he should’ve come off the Rhythm route.
But lasting change happens when you can put him back inside the rep, grab his spotlight of attention, and guide his eyes to the information he missed.
“Look left. See that safety? See his position?”
That’s the A-ha moment.
Now you’re not just correcting a mistake. You’re changing what his brain looks for the next time that picture appears.
Don’t just correct the rep. Change what he sees.
QB development takes time you don’t have. So we built a time machine.
The problem isn’t always a lack of coaching. It’s a lack of purposeful reps.
A QB may need weeks—or months—to accumulate enough game-like visual reps to recognize patterns, control his eyes, and make decisions faster.
Technology gives us a way to compress that learning curve.
We can define exactly where his eyes should anchor, Dot and scan—then give him rep after rep of the same critical visual problems until the process becomes smooth.
Don’t just add reps. Compress development.
Don’t just teach your QB where to go next. Train where his eyes need to land when he gets there.
Most progressions are taught as routes: 1 → 2 → 3.
But knowing the order doesn’t tell the QB how to look.
R4 defines the fixation points—the specific route-side spaces the QB needs to Dot within the timeline of the play.
Now the QB isn’t searching for information. His eyes have a plan:
• Where to anchor
• Where to reset
• Where to Dot next
Define the scan. Define the fixation points. Train the eyes.
A superpower for accelerating QB anticipation: Train predictive saccades. We call ’em Dots.
Anticipation isn’t just throwing the ball early. It starts with getting the eyes to the right space early.
Too many QBs wait until the first answer disappears before deciding where to look next. That delay compounds through the entire progression.
Pre-plan the scan.
Know where the next Dot is before you need it.
When the eyes know where they’re going next, they can arrive sooner, gather the visual information faster, and keep the progression on schedule.
Plan the Scan → Place the Dots → Accelerate Anticipation.
Your QB’s eyes can process more than you think.
A punch step isn’t just part of the drop. It’s a window for information.
In roughly 150–200 milliseconds, the brain can see a visual stimulus, process it, and begin to understand what it means.
That means a QB can gather multiple visual snapshots during a single punch step—enough information to help confirm whether a route space is capped or uncapped.
The goal isn’t to give the QB more time to see.
It’s to train him to see more in the time he already has.

The #1 killer of progression passing.
Progression passing is built on decision deadlines.
When a QB hangs on a route space too long, he doesn’t just make one read late—he makes every read that follows late.
The goal isn’t simply to teach quarterbacks where to look next.
Train them to know when it’s time to move on.

One of the toughest traits to train into a QB:
Eye-foot dissociation.
When the first route space gets capped, the eyes have to leave it and find the next best space—while the feet are still working the drop.
The eyes lead. The feet follow.
Get a QB to master this and the progression goes into turbo mode.
This is what we mean in R4 when we say:
Eyes are the dot. Feet are the clock.
We spend a lot of time teaching quarterbacks to identify the entire coverage.
But that’s not how they actually play.
Post-snap, the QB is looking at a specific route space at a specific time.
So instead of only asking:
“What coverage is this?”
We need to train:
What does this defensive pattern mean for the route I’m looking at right now?
That requires better drills, better language and a better brevity code for the patterns that actually drive the decision.
In Episode #81 of the Coach Speak Podcast, we get into how the R4 System is trying to simplify the game without dumbing it down—and accelerate what a quarterback actually needs to recognize.
The problem isn’t how much coaches know.
It’s how we transfer what we know to the quarterback.
A 15-year-old QB doesn’t need 20 years of coaching knowledge dumped on him. He needs a system that distills that complexity into something he can see, recognize and use.
That’s the purpose of R4.
Build the bridge.
See the connections.
Recognize the patterns faster.
Understand where the advantages are.
The goal isn’t to simplify football.
It’s to accelerate understanding.

The quality of your questions is the secret to QB coaching.
You can’t coach a quarterback’s attention if you don’t know what he’s paying attention to.
Where were your eyes?
Who did you see?
What movement drove your decision?
Ask the question first. Let the QB tell you what he saw. If he can’t answer it, now you know exactly where the coaching needs to start.
That’s how you fill the gaps between what happened on film and what the quarterback actually perceived in the moment.
