Most people assume a freestanding tub needs a big bathroom. This one sits in a room not much wider than the tub.

The video runs in the order the work really happens. The curtain rod comes down first and the burgundy wallpaper comes off in strips. Only then does the old tub with its tiled front go out. The far wall and the right wall get cement board and subway tile, while the left wall sits outside the splash zone and gets painted shiplap instead. The patterned floor goes down late in the job, so the rest of the work doesn’t beat it up.

That floor is cement tile, and it needs sealing before grout and again after. Skip the first coat and the grout stains it for good.

If you’ve got a long, narrow bathroom in New Jersey and someone told you a tub like this won’t fit, comment + and your town.

Powder-blue tub with a matching toilet: keep it for the retro look, or tear it out?

A lot of 1960s houses around New Jersey still have one, and some owners defend theirs hard. Here’s the other option. Everything blue comes out down to the studs, and the new white tub goes in before the cement board, so the board laps over the tub’s fl**ge and any water running down the tile ends up in the tub instead of inside the wall. After the seams are sealed, white subway runs to the ceiling and wraps the window, with the corner shelves set in as the tile goes up. If there’s a window in your tub wall, the time to deal with it is while the wall is open.

On team tear-it-out? Comment + and your town and we’ll message you back.

Be honest, when did anyone last turn on the jets in that jacuzzi?

In the final frame the freestanding tub stands about where a tiled jacuzzi platform used to eat up a third of the room. Watch it backwards and the order makes sense. The round mirrors and their lights go up last. Before them the tub arrives with its floor-mounted faucet and the sinks drop into the counter, and before that the walnut vanity is hung on freshly painted walls. The walk-in shower is tiled before any paint goes on, and the floor goes down across the whole room ahead of everything. At the very start there’s carpet from wall to wall and a mirror as long as the vanity with a row of Hollywood bulbs above it.

The marble here is porcelain. You get the veining without the sealing schedule and the etching that real marble brings into a bathroom.

Wood and water don’t get along, which is why the back wall of this shower isn’t wood. It’s porcelain plank tile with an oak grain, and it doesn’t care how long your showers run.

It starts from small brown tile with a diamond border and a folding vinyl door, a setup plenty of New Jersey houses still have. That comes out down to the studs, a new shower base goes in, and the cement board gets its seams sealed. White subway goes on the side walls first and the planks go on the back, with the two niches framed in matte black. The glass panel is the very last thing in, since it’s measured to the finished tile rather than to the bare wall.

Still pulling a folding door shut every morning? Comment + and your town and we’ll reach out.

Still stepping into a fibreglass insert every morning? It went in fast when the house was built, and after twenty-odd years it shows.

This is the order a tiled walk-in goes together once the insert and its sliding door are out. The shower comes back to bare studs and gets a mortar bed sloped toward the drain. Cement board goes over the walls, and then comes the step nobody sees in the finished photos: every seam and every screw head is taped and sealed before the first tile goes up. The bench and the grab bars get planned while the walls are still open, because adding backing behind finished tile later is a much bigger job.

This one started as a mustard yellow bathroom with an oak vanity. The tub and the toilet stayed
put. Everything else came out down to the studs.

Behind the marble sits cement board and a waterproofed alcove. That layer is what decides
whether the wall is still dry ten years from now, and it is the part nobody photographs.

That tub is the one the owners already had. Everything around it came off, down to the studs.

Behind the green tile sits the part nobody photographs: orange Kerdi board, every seam and
every screw head sealed over. That layer is what keeps the wall dry ten years from now.

Vertical stacked tile from the tub rim to the ceiling, and the same tub back in service.
