2Pac once said the rose that grew from the concrete was something beautiful born from a shattered foundation. That’s me. I became a father without ever having one. No guidance, no blueprint, just pain.

The word father used to hurt. In my neighborhood it was spoken with anger. I grew up hearing my mother and my friends’ mothers talk down on their fathers, so when I became one, it hit deep. I felt like I became something the world hated.

When my son was born, I didn’t hold him for two months. Not because I didn’t love him, but because I didn’t know how to be there. One night I leaned over his crib, and he grabbed my finger. That one small moment changed everything. It gave me confidence. It made me show up.

As a little boy, I used to stare at grown men wondering if one of them was my father. I carried that emptiness into adulthood until I realized that showing up for my son was healing that little boy in me.

Fatherhood taught me love, patience, discipline, and healing. I raised my son like I was trying to save myself. Now he’s 20 years old, in college, doing incredible things. He’s my superhero. Watching him grow has been my greatest reward.
