Teton County Search & Rescue fielded three rescue calls over the weekend.

At 6:22 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, volunteers were called to respond to a 47-year-old woman who was injured in a horseback-riding accident in the Soda Fork area of the Teton Wilderness. After receiving the call, TCSAR assembled a helicopter team due to the incident location and time of day.

TCSAR also sent ground teams equipped with the wheeled litter in case the helicopter became grounded due to unsettled weather in the forecast.

After locating the patient, a resident of Evanston, Wyo., the heli team landed nearby, loaded her internally, and flew her back to SAR HQ in Jackson. From there, she was transferred to an ambulance with Jackson Hole Fire/EMS.

At 12:45 p.m. on Sunday, September 20, TCSAR received an emergency notification from a Garmin satellite device regarding a man who’d been in a horse accident in the Teton Wilderness. The patient, a 64-year-old male from Park City, Utah, sustained injuries after his horse stumbled and rolled on top of him.

As in the rescue from the day before, TCSAR dispatched a heli team and a ground team in case the ship got grounded by weather. The helicopter located the patient, loaded him internally, and flew him back to a waiting ambulance at SAR HQ.

Later Sunday, at 10:17 p.m., TCSAR was alerted to a backpacker in distress on the Teton Crest Trail. The patient, a 59-year-old male, complained of symptoms consistent with a potentially serious medical issue.

With the call well after dark—and because TCSAR’s helicopter can’t fly at night—the team requested an air ambulance from Air Idaho. This air ambulance was able to locate the patient, load him into their ship, and transport him to higher medical care.

These incidents illustrate the efficiency of a rescue helicopter as well as its limitations. Backcountry users should be aware that weather and darkness can hamper response times, especially as the days grow shorter and produce inclement weather. As you plan your outing, think about what a self-rescue would require, and whether you'd be prepared to wait several hours for help to arrive.
