✨It's $5 Friday!!! Could you spare a few dollars to help us with medical expenses and supplies?✨

This is Mama Tilly ~ A sweet girl found outside and scooped up by a kind samaritan ♥️

She is extremelyyyy pregnant, but isn't a good candidate for a spay/abort due to medical reasons. While we normally try to avoid adding onto the overwhelming cat population, we won't go against a vets advice if they don't think it's safe.

Her tongue sticks out because she has abscesses in her mouth and she will probably also need dental work done, which is REALLY expensive. She has already had a round of aggressive antibiotics and she is on probiotics for some mild stomach issues and diarrhea.

Tilly is currently with the amazing foster Shelly, who has a tremendous amount of vet tech experience - just in case she needs help delivering and caring for her babies.
She's expecting 5-6 little ones and might not be able to clean and potty them properly due to her mouth issues, there's even a small chance they might even have to be bottle fed. It all depends on how she handles the stress and overall care requirements the babies will need. She is due ANY day now.

Goodness it sure is a Monday! I'm not sure why people keep thinking it's okay to be disrespectful..

A lady from the Jackson Mobile Home Park has been missing a cat for about a month- the cat is a fixed dilute tortie with an orange stripe and a purple collar. She found out we do TNR in the area and naturally wanted to call us and ask if we maybe had her cat. Except she wouldn't accept no as an answer.

The only TNR we have done in that park the last month was a small black cat we named Zoot- who was an unfixed male from the back of the park. He is now fixed and has been returned to be with his feral mom, who we also fixed and returned earlier this year.
Most of our TNR cases in that park took place during the summer months, and we returned all of the adults minus a white/tabby male that needed to be humanely euthanized. We took a few litters of kittens that needed socialization before transfer, and they were caught underneath abandoned and unoccupied trailers.

While we aren't completely done with TNR in the Jackson Mobile Home Park, trapping has been very slow because we have already fixed around 40+ cats there and there are only two roads. As of lately we have mostly been doing rescue work in Sherman Oaks, Sun Valley, and we are planning to move over to the Arbor Village area to help with the feral population over there.

She explained that the cat didn't have an ear tip so we wouldn't have known if she was fixed - but we then told her that the vet we work with tells us if any of the cats we bring in are fixed already.
If a cat is already fixed without an ear tip, it indicates ownership and we will either put the cat back where it was found like we do with regular TNRs or we will look for the owners. It depends on the temperament of the kitty and if we have space to hold it while we look for owners. Which most times we don't.

This year we have focused on wildlife and kittens because a litter can turn into an entire colony if left unchecked and we are also one of the only rescues permitted to take wildlife in the area.
I also explained that we return TNR adults unless they are found to be friendly and we have direct permission from the consistent caretaker of said cat.
We don't intake cats with collars unless they are in bad shape, and majority of the cats we catch for TNR would put you in the hospital if you touched them. Feral cats are very spicy and do not like humans, it's not super difficult distinguishing a loved cat VS a feral.

I told her several times we don't have a cat matching the description she gave us, and that the only cat we have taken from the park in the timeframe she provided, was Zoot. *Pictured below*

This lady then asked for my SUPERVISOR, and said if we have her cat she will be pressing charges. I wished her luck on finding her kitty and ended the call so I could continue rescue chores and feeding everyone their lunch.

If you are missing a kitty, please post it in the local lost and found groups immediately so people can be on the lookout- and be sure to check the county shelter regularly because they don't always have the time to post every found animal.
Microchipping is also super important because then finders have contact information and confirmation of ownership and can contact you immediately if they come across your kitty. We have returned several kitties to their owners through microchip information, and we love reuniting lost pets with their loved ones!

If you think we may have come across your kitty, you are always welcome to reach out and ask- but please understand if we haven't. There are thousands of cats in the city, and we are currently a very small rescue just doing our best.

Board member Elizabeth and her mom found this little dude scared and screaming in a bush, now he's a little 'menace' to society - can you guess his name? 😝

I wasn't going to say anything.. but it has weighed on my chest all day.

This? Is a COMPLETELY unacceptable way to speak to ANY rescue or rescuer.

It's no secret that we have been overwhelmed, and panleukopenia just ravaged through our young kittens. We lost several and have been grieving for weeks as we fought tooth and nail to save their lives. Hours and hours of cleaning, late nights, constant critical care and fluids, constant disinfecting and worrying about cross contamination, constantly crushed every time we lost a baby. With a mortality rate of 90% the odds were stacked against us the moment the first test turned positive.

We couldn't even save Olive... And she and two of her siblings died with our vet tech foster despite everything. Before she could even get her enucleation surgery. I cried for two days straight after she lost her fight with pan leuk.. and we are NOT out of the clear yet. This virus has effected a lot of rescues this year and the seven trailer park kittens that went with foster Bex were also exposed to it before they even came to rescue. Their mother tested positive, so she was probably a carrier and passed it to the kittens while they were nursing. That's two separate lines of exposure for the same deadly illness in the past two months. Vaccines are being given out almost as fast as we can order them.

Just this morning, I had to drop off one of my personal pets that suddenly passed over the rainbow bridge yesterday at the funeral home so she could be cremated.
These last few weeks have been nothing but grief. And yet we still push through and keep fighting for these cats. The world doesn't stop for anyone or anything.

If a rescue isn't messaging you back, it's not because they are choosing to ignore you. It's because they are choosing the animals in their care before adding onto a plate that has no more room. There are only so many hours in a day, and most of those hours go straight to the animals, responsibilities and our families.

I didn't respond to her message BECAUSE I'm helping the cats, just not hers.. because we genuinely cannot handle any more cases right now or it completely compromises the level of care we can provide. Between the fosters on our team, we have around 20+ cats/kittens in rescue right now. There is no room.

Please keep in mind- rescuers are not paid to do this either.. everyone that does rescue does so out of the kindness of their hearts and most times we even put our own money into care supplies and vet costs. There is zero reason to disrespect a rescue/rescuer and tell them to quit because they didn't respond to you. You are not OWED a message back, rescues are busy caring for the animals and will always try to message back when we have the time.

Regardless of the hateful message from Cheryl this morning, I'll be honest.. I think about quitting all the time. I feel like you aren't doing rescue the right way if you don't think or feel that way from time to time. It's part of accepting you cannot save them all, and the constant helpless feeling when the requests keep pouring in but every single cage is full and funds are exhausted or non existent.

The compassion fatigue is overwhelming.

We have been hemorrhaging vet costs and burning through supplies to keep everyone alive, fed, and as healthy and happy as possible all year. We are doing our very best and we will continue to do so.

If you have donated anything at any point, it's because of you that we have been able to stay on our feet and we are extremely grateful for you and your help. ♥️

If you have messaged us and haven't gotten a response - I am so sorry.

HLAR is not a very big rescue, and there are only a couple of us. We do not have a building, nor do we have staff or qualify for grants yet. Right now- It's just a couple of people who work together and partner with other rescues because we all love animals and want to make a difference. 🫶🏻

✨It's $5 Friday!!✨

This girl is from the recent abandonment case, but was caught after the clinic had already happened. And while we understand some of you may disagree.. she needs to be spayed ASAP.

We cannot afford to have additional kittens right now and because of the panleukopenia issue we just went through - they will be at risk. Not to mention, there are so many cats/kittens already without enough homes to adopt them. We have a waitlist for kittens going into the next year.. every rescue does.
It's not fair to have human emotions projected onto her when she is adjusting to the stress and change after being abandoned and thrown out of a window by the person that was supposed to love and take care of her.

Our goal is to raise at least $150 for this sweet girl so she can get spayed and receive her rabies vaccine. If we can get 30 people to send $5, we can reach this goal!

♥️ Goal: $110/$150 ♥️

According to the neighbor of the man that abandoned her and the other kitties, she has already given birth to several litters in her very short lifetime. We actually have several of her children that were born at the beginning of the year.
She doesn't deserve to go through that again and spend the next 2-3 months devoting her time to another litter of babies. She deserves to be put first this time, SHE deserves to be the baby. ♥️

Please understand we do not take this kind of decision lightly and we do not enjoy it, but we believe it to be the most humane route as long as the vet deems it to be safe. A life is not saved simply by being born, and there are thousands of babies suffering on this planet already.

✨TEN kitties went into the clinic today✨

Two ferals sadly had to be euthanized though 💔

One had dental issues so severe he would have needed pretty much all of his teeth removed- it would have cost hundreds of dollars and he wouldn't have had a quality of life living outside regardless of the outcome. He also had several nails curling into his paw pads and they were severely infected.

The other euthanasia had an infected eye, his lids on the one eye were essentially turned inside out and he would have needed a surgery to correct it- along with pillow pad disease (plasma cell pododermatitis) this is extremely painful and would have needed several rounds of medication, which is not possible for feral cats that won't let you touch them unless they are sedated.

Both of them were suffering and we chose to go with the vet's recommendation and helped them cross the rainbow bridge this morning. 💔🪽

On a good note- one of the kitties from the trailer park hoarding/abandonment case was thankfully friendly and social enough to be transferred directly after surgery! The rest will be going into foster to determine if they are good candidates for adoption and if they can overcome the anxiety and stress of this big change. They will probably need some in depth socializing before this can happen.
They aren't aggressive, but they are very frightened of people right now and I'm sure the trauma of being left behind and thrown out of a window would be hard to handle for anyone..

Today's appointment cost us about $300, but it was worth every single penny and the hard work behind it. Huge thank you to those who donated, foster Bex for driving over an hour to help with pre-op for the kitties and Julie for doing transportation. 🫶🏻

We couldn't do this without our community ♥️

✨Want to sponsor a kitty and help us change its life? It's only $35! Even though we are a bit overwhelmed right now, we plan on doing 10 more trailer park cats next month before the fall chill starts to settle in 🫶🏻

Miss Sweet Pea from Sherman Oaks has officially been TRANSFERRED to Cascades Humane Society - Jackson, MI

This sweet girl came to us at the beginning of the week, originally meant for TNR. She was born last spring but well loved by her caretaker so she doesn't have the spice most outdoor kitties have. Her caretaker just wanted what was best for her, whether it was being fixed and brought back- or given the chance at a new home and loving family.
Head bumps are the biggest sign that a "feral" isnt feral and wants to be loved.

She does the cutest little head bumps ♥️

Please consider adopting this Sweet Pea, she is worth it and she will bring so much love into your home 🫶🏻
