Opera Mississippi’s mission is to provide the community and state with the most dynamic musical stage productions possible. In addition, activities include a variety of educational and community outreach programs including educational performances to students and a variety of other performances for citizens of all ages, including pop, jazz, country, and musical theatre cabarets. The annual John Alexander National Vocal Competition, the only nationally advertised music competition in the state, is designed to recognize and award outstanding vocalists in both opera and musical theatre. Opera Mississippi is proud to be an integral part of the remarkable artistic heritage that shapes the state, and each year thousands of Mississippians and visitors attend and benefit from our quality performances. Among the remarkable singers that have graced Opera Mississippi stage, are internationally known Beverly Sills, Monserrat Caballe, Robert Merrill, James McCracken, Roberta Peters, Jan Peerce, Richard Tucker, Normal Treigle, John Alexander, Renée Fleming and many others. The growth of Opera Mississippi is reflected in our significant increase in our various activities, variety of performances, board members, sponsors and donors, and educational audiences, as well as our increase in ticket sales and grants. It continues to be a pleasure to be a part of Opera Mississippi’s growth and to work with our outstanding performers, board members, staff and you, our supporters. Few artists have shaped American music as profoundly as Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Born just months apart in 1926, these legendary musicians transformed jazz, expanded the language of modern music, and influenced generations of artists around the world. Opera Mississippi will celebrate their extraordinary legacies with Centennial Giants: Coltrane and Davis, an unforgettable evening honoring two of the most visionary figures in American music.
Davis and Coltrane first crossed paths in the legendary Miles Davis Quintet, where Davis’s cool, understated trumpet sound met Coltrane’s searching, fiery saxophone. Together, they helped create some of the most influential recordings in jazz history, including music associated with the landmark album Kind of Blue. Though their artistic paths eventually diverged, both continued to challenge convention and redefine what jazz could become.
As the world marks the 100th anniversary of their births, Centennial Giants: Coltrane and Davis is an event that celebrates these two innovators whose music continues to inspire, challenge, and move audiences.
