Daydreams Comics

Hey everyone! It’s Zach, here to announce my new part time venture in the world of collectibles: Similar in scope to what the Daydreams Dungeon was many years ago, it will have a focus on the world of vintage/retro collectibles outside of what does with their day to day activities. My main business will focus on trading cards, toys, posters, statues, video games and some comics & graphic novels (nothing in the way of new releases, but graded comics and some old prestige format or out of print graphic novels). This will not be a full time gig, as my jobs on the road touring will be my main priority, and there are no plans currently to have a store front. I will mainly be selling through as well as IG and FB posts/stories/livestreams. It will also be slow going for the foreseeable future, as I have an overwhelming amount of material to unpack/organize/process/etc before things really get rolling in a more steady capacity. Happy GI Joe Day! On this day back in 1964 the first GI Joe action figure was introduced. Over the years there have been several iterations of the Joe franchise - but the height of the popularity was in the early 80s when the toys, animated TV show, and comic books dominated popular culture! One of the major forces behind the popularity was Larry Hama. If you didn't know - now you know. And knowing is half the battle. It’s the end of an era: today marks the beginning of Jake’s last week at the shop. After 15 years, he has decided to pursue a career path in the medical world! We thank him for his great efforts over the years to help keep the shop running smoothly, the back issues priced, and smiles on customers faces. We all wish him the absolute best in his new adventure. His last day will be Friday, June 23rd, so swing through and bid him a “see you later” because if you’re lucky, you may see him in the future picking up his pull list from the shop, instead of going to that other one… 😜😬👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻

I grew up infatuated with comic books. Their magic of possibility & imagination were both my doorway and my escape. My love was genuine and sewn into my very fabric. But as I grew, I found out about this new thing that took up my time, attention and most important my money: girls. It wasn't until college when I came to the realization that "women suck" and I cozied back up to my long-lost friend, comics.

Not too long after though my local college town shop closed, and I needed a new joint to feed my habit. I'll be honest, Laramie (or Wook as he is better known around these parts) was my introduction to Daydreams and put me off a bit the first time I met him. With his long hair, big stature and brash enthusiasm, this comic-squatch made me apprehensive. I was too demure and he was too boisterously nice for me.

It may be embarrassing to say but I chose to get my stack from Iguanas. I didn't live in town or go in the shop, so it was easy to make such a mistake. But as their Beanie Baby empire came crumbling down, my partner moved my list over to Daydreams. She occasionally read some comics but would frequently speak to the knowledgeable and friendly owner Adam about a variety of other topics when she would pick up my pull.

Eventually I graduated and moved to Iowa City to then strike up my own rewarding friendship quickly with Adam. I would assume it was my cordiality, taste, and ability that led Adam to extend a job offer my way. I never looked back. From part-time, to full-time, to management, Daydreams has been a dream job and my opportunity to give of myself to all of you over the past 15 years. Through multiple locations, multiple owners, many deep friendships, and more comics than I care to contemplate this has been my rewarding journey over these long years.

Now, I leave the banner of “comic shop guy” to the capable hands of Zach, Nathan, and whomever the next lucky soul that steps up to replace me in the business of selling dreams. I have accepted a new position at the University of Iowa hospital and this will be my last week working at Daydreams Comics. It has been a long and joyous ride with you all and my envious pleasure to serve you these many long years. I want to thank you all for giving me a home, letting me thrive and grow as a person, and welcoming me as a friend & member of the Daydreams family. I love you all and hope that I have made your Wednesday’s more blessed and your love of comics even deeper.

I have been and always shall be your friend.

Big week for new cards! Paldea Evolved drops today, Series 2 baseball is in stock, as well as 2023 Bowman Chrome U, featuring Iowa Hawkeye legend Swing down and rip some packs!

With an initial forecast for high winds, and now rain throughout the day, we are going to be doing a bit different this year: we will have pre packaged lots of five comics to give away! They are all grouped by age content (all ages, teen, and mature/teen - one pack per customer). The front and back comics are varied, and the interior comics will also be randomly organized. Maybe not the most ideal way to go about it, but it’s what we have! As an added bonus, we have randomly inserted ten gift certificates to the shop throughout the packs 🤑 we are also having a sale on all back issues and packaged toy. Kicks off at 11am, hope you can make it down ❤️

It’s that time of year again: is right around the corner. Swing into the shop on Saturday, May 6th for some freebies and specials!

It’s officially a snow day at the shop! We will be closed for today (Thursday, February 16th) and plan to be open normal hours again starting tomorrow. Sorry for any inconvenience, and hope you enjoy your day either out in the snow or inside where it’s warm!

Well, good news/bad news: the X-Men #1 I purchased a couple months ago is back and for sale! Unfortunately I chose the wrong person to wash out some water staining on the front cover, and it is now considered restored 🤦🏻‍♂️ the book looks significantly better, but having a restored notation turns off a lot of potential buyers. I can supply before/after photos if anyone would like to see the difference.

That said, the books is now for sale in the shop! Price: $8000.

I will consider cash/trade deals as well, but only for higher value ($500+ value) comics that are also graded by CGC or CBCS.
