75 Years of Fair Trade

75 years ago, Ten Thousand Villages founder Edna Ruth Byler introduced the idea now known as fair trade. At the time, she didn’t realize that she would become the pioneer of a global movement for ethical sourcing and human rights. She simply saw a need and she acted.

75 Years of Fair Trade The story of one woman's vision for a better world and how that vision became the global fair trade movement. Ten Thousand Villages turns 75.

Nothing is constant but change and Ten Thousand Villages of Iowa City has seen a whirlwind of changes throughout the past 17 months! We forged through and have fared well thanks to our strong responsive board, Joani Miller, and Deb Manning.

Joani was a newer board member at that time but courageously stepped in to be our Interim Executive Director when Cassidy took another opportunity next door. Joani's professional acumen, management, and determination serve our Ped Mall store very well. Deb has been our assistant executive director almost as long as the store has been open. Deb and Joani formed a strong team and together complemented each other's knowledge base and talents.

We are excited to announce another change happening on September 1. Liz Preciado Genell will fill the role as executive director on a nearly full-time basis. She comes to Villages with great retail and life experiences. Liz understands and lives our mission. See Liz’s bio below.

The board of directors gives big kudos to both Joani and Deb for keeping us in the solid position we are in today. We thank Joani for her willingness to step in as interim executive director and look forward to her returning to the board. We look forward to Liz’s and Deb’s leadership toward even greater success. Stop by the store in September to welcome Liz as you are shopping our Maker-to-Market little gem of a store in Downtown Iowa City!

Liz Preciado Genell lives in Iowa City with her husband Sean, her six-year-old daughter Helen, and 2 cats. She grew up in Iowa City and has deep roots working in the Iowa City downtown. Liz worked and managed Revival clothing store for ten years as well as working for The Iowa Artisan’s Gallery and The Soap Opera. Recently she taught at The Montessori Children’s Nursery and completed her Montessori 3-6 year old internship at the Montessori Children’s Garden. She has an AA in Communications/Media and is close to completing her BA in Creative Writing Nonfiction from the University of Iowa. She loves crafting, meditation, taking night walks and live music. Her passions include, Montessori education, community support for parents of young children, and writing about the intersection of poverty, mental health and gender. Liz feels that her new position at Ten Thousand Villages is “meant to be” because it aligns so well with her family’s values of eco-friendly sustainability, social justice, income equality and gender equality. She is excited to champion these causes globally.

WELCOME LIZ, from the Villages family!
