IBTC is proud to announce our “Between the Smile and the Scar” Juneteenth-inspired community conversation taking place on Independence Day—a meaningful act of reflection, remembrance, and dialogue. While America celebrates July 4th, we invite our community to also honor the unfinished journey toward freedom that Juneteenth represents.

Inspired by the themes of The Colored Museum and W.E.B. Du Bois’ concept of “double consciousness,” this gathering explores the joy, resilience, challenges, and complexities of the Black experience in America. “Us looking at Us”! Together, we will celebrate Black culture, confront difficult truths, and engage in honest conversation about the impact of racism and the path forward.

Facilitated by J Bland Made Man and Dr. Austin Dean Ashford, this free event will combine fellowship, great barbecue, fun, and meaningful dialogue designed to move beyond discussion and toward action. Through the CARE framework—Confront, Analyze, Rectify, Execute—we will work together to identify practical steps that can strengthen our communities and advance the promise of freedom for all.

Join us on July 4th as we celebrate Juneteenth not just as a moment in history, but as an ongoing call to action. Limited spots are available and registration will close once capacity is reached. Location will be provided upon registration.

The Colored Museum by George C. Wolfe is bold, hilarious, thought-provoking, soulful, and deeply human — using comedy and explosive storytelling to spark conversations that matter.

This isn’t just entertainment.
