I wrote this because some stories beg to be called what they are: stunts dressed up as protest. Former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White ‘declared’ for the WNBA, testing the league’s vague self-identification rules—and the result is equal parts comedy and chaos.

We walked through the claims, the reactions and the real question underneath: how does a league balance inclusion with fair competition? Fans, players and the WNBA office all had something to say—and not all of it was polite.

I’ve been following the South Bend police recordings for years. Now a court has ordered them destroyed — and Hoosiers deserve better than silence.

Why erase potentially historic evidence before we’ve had a real accounting? Preservation isn’t the same as publication. There are thoughtful options: a court-appointed reviewer, redacted transcripts, sealed portions that protect privacy while keeping the record intact. Those options still let history be examined later.

Secrecy breeds rumors. That’s exactly why transparency — when the law allows it — matters. We’re not demanding spectacle. We’re asking for answers: what’s on those tapes, who listened to them, and why is destruction the only path being offered?

I’m calling on leaders, judges, and investigators to pursue every lawful step to preserve the record and explain their decisions to the public. History belongs to Hoosiers — not to secrecy.
