Looking forward to the 2026 HRPI (Huntsville) and TRPI (Tuscaloosa). May 25 - July 10, 2026.
Applications open Dec. 1. Ask your pre-med advisor for details or e-mail [email protected]
As many of you know the HRPI is now half of the RPI! Our colleagues in Tucaloosa have established the TRPI and it is sure to be a great program inset the leadership of Drake, Susan, Lakeisha and Holly; the Dream Team of rural medicine in W Alabama. Tomorrow we will discuss the interview process and PJ, Julia and David will review each applicant. This is a competitive program with 60-70 excellent AL students from all over the state vying for 24 places. Invitations for interview will go out as soon as we can manage.
Good luck to all!

Well the application cycle is officially open:

This year our rural UA colleagues have an exciting program, the Tuscaloosa Rural Premedical Internship. TRPI
My friend Drake Lavender and his staff, Holly McCaleb and Susan Guin are sure to put on a great program. You cannot do both😕
To be eligible you must be from Alabama and have lived in a rural town for eight or more years or graduated from a rural high school. You must also have finished four semesters of on campus college work (or more).
Leadership, community service, cultural awareness and academics will count heavily in the selection process.
The stipend for both programs is the same after housing costs. Please make sure you have been immunized against Covid as some rotations & hospitals in the internship will require it.
This program is an important step in one’s professional development. The UAB Heersink School of Medicine sees these internships as a valuable element in your CV.
We hope to give many hours of shadowing or actually working with family physicians, teach you to suture, read basic EKGs and X-rays as well as CPR and an introduction to clinical medicine. You will be required to attend all didactics and field trips; if you have to take two weeks off to get married better wait until next year.
If you are from a town > 50,000 or from a small town near a big city (Madison, Homewood, etc.) you will not be considered.
Good luck! For questions please call me Alabama!

Pre-Medical Internship - School of Medicine | UAB The UAB School of Medicine consistently ranks among the nation's very best academic medical centers for research, education, and clinical care.
The HRPI is the most competitive medical program in the state statistically. One must be from rural Alabama and show evidence of interest in rural MD practice. We ordinarily are able to accept about one out of six applicants.
We consider this experience a step toward UAB Heersink School of Medicine.
This year we are proud to announce that UAB’s regional Tuscaloosa campus is hosting a summer internship also. While the details are still being worked out, I know my colleagues Dr. Drake Lavender and Ms. Susan Guin will make it a fantastic experience. This should effectively double the number of places UAB can offer and be much closer to students from SW AL.
When the application opens after Thanksgiving we hope to see our best and brightest rural physicians-to-be competing for one of these experiences.
Glad to be visiting the pre-med freshman orientation and AED groups tomorrow.
These should interest all rural applicants!

Congratulations to the HRPI students of the 2021 session. You are all outstanding and I am privileged to have known you. Please keep in touch and let me know if I can be of some small service.
Your presentations were outstanding.

Congratulations to former HRPI students Alesha Amerson and Christa Hastings for winning UAB SOM student research awards.
I am sad to report that the HRPI will be cancelled for the 2020 season due to COVID 19 limitations. We may be able to put together some virtual experiences, but the shadowing elements will not be offered.
David Bramm, Director
We have had to say no to a number of excellent applicants due to the high demand. We are hoping that COVID 19 will not interfere with the summer program, but the situation is fluid and we will have to wait and see.
Everyone need the warnings about social distancing and hand hygiene. The illness if for real.
