Did you know that the phrase “Ye olde” found on different signs is actually a mistranslation. The word taken as “Ye” was in reality the Anglo-Saxon letter “eth” and indicated one of the “th” sounds. It looked like an italicized D with a slanted line through its stem. Over time, the loop of the D faded, leaving only a symbol resembling a “Y,” thus the “Ye.”
