🦅Patient BO74-26🦅

Our Bald Eagle friend came to us in the beginning of April. He was found at a gravel pit unable to fly. X-rays revealed that he suffered from a fractured clavicle. With rest, medications, and strength training he was ready to be back outside! He made a marvelous recovery and was released back into the wild! ❤

Double feature for this week’s Patient of the Week! 🐾

The first is actually one we’ve had for a while, a momma opossum. She came in with severe frostbite that left her tail in need of amputation at the tip. When we saw she had a pouch full of tiny pink joeys only the size of jellybeans, we opted to wait on surgery and medically manage her until her babies were large enough to be safely removed from her pouch. Leaving them attached to ni***es and nursing during surgery wasn’t an option since they would be affected by any drugs used. She has proven to be a fantastic mother, and surgery went without a hitch. Her passel of babies has grown so much!

The second is a new intake. This tiny screech owl was found on the side of the road, likely after colliding with a vehicle. He is exhibiting signs of head trauma with pupils being two different sizes, which is a condition called anisocoria. Time will tell how he responds to treatment and if there is any lasting neurological damage. We are hoping for the best!

Our clinic is still full and very busy, as this is our most active time of the year. While the work we do is physically, mentally, and emotionally draining, making a difference for wildlife in need, like these patients, means everything to us. Thanks for supporting us and making this possible! Y’all are the best! 💜

Exciting news- the NatureScape pond and waterfall are now open! 🥳

If you aren’t familiar with Alexandria’s NatureScape and have young kiddos, you need to check it out! The pond is a family favorite all summer long, offering a cool place to wade and play with water toys. 🌊🚤🦈

While visiting, be sure to check out the Tree House and other activities in this natural play area that provides hours of outside fun and opportunities for low-stakes risk taking as kids explore and test their physical abilities.

HUGE THANK YOU to father-son duo Scott and Justin who volunteered hours and hours of their time over many days to get the pond up and running while ensuring the water quality is top notch! We appreciate you! 👏

We are happy to report Baaab is recovering well from surgery! Unfortunately he is not cleared to be with Mary yet, so he had to go to another facility temporarily for stall rest, but he will be back home next week! Thank you for all the positive vibes, prayers, and contributions toward his care. And thank you to the Silo Ranch of Commerce for giving him a place to stay while he heals! 🫶

The pigment in Blue Jay feathers is melanin, which is brown. The blue color is caused by scattering light through modified cells on the surface of the feather barbs.
