You are never alone. On July 28, 2026, Jacob Chacon succumbed to his battle with mental illness.
I went to his funeral service. I had lunch with his family. I hugged and shook the hands of all of his grieving family. They all spoke of how much this place meant to him, and of what the hobby has meant to him.
We are in the business of escapism.
One of the three pillars to our company’s philosophy is to have a clean play space that is welcoming to everyone. We know that we are the highlight of the week, month, or day to some of you that come in and visit us.
I got that feeling from Jacobs family. We were a highlight of his week every Friday and Monday when he came into play commander with us.
I never got to spend much time with Jacob. We were always on opposite sides of the counter. I was there pulling cards and he was there to play with them.
But there was a part in his service that I broke down. When the priest said his laughter would never ring out again. That hit me hard. The thing I remember the most is hearing that laugh from that front table by the door.
I wish I had known him better; what his favorite color was in Magic, his favorite commander, if he ever played any other games. But I can't know that now. I won't know his story from his own words. Only from the words of others who also heard that joyous laugh and got to sit and play games with him.
The same week that Jacob was laid to rest, we held our Magic Prereleases. We held a moment of silence for Jacob, and I made a speech to everyone there about him, saying very similar things as I am now.
We have this space for you.
We are here for you on your hard days, or in your bad moments. This community is here for you. You are valued. You are loved. You have a space where you belong. You are never alone.
And yes, I will go to your funeral. But I would much rather hear about your suffering while you are alive.
We want everyone in our community to be more than just a memory.
Because I still miss Jacob's laugh.
If you are struggling, please reach out. You can also dial 988 or click the link for the Su***de and Crisis Prevention Lifeline. You are never alone.

We want to thank Mirela for taking a moment to share their experience with us here at The Upkeep Games in Howell! We truly appreciate your feedback! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Every time Ive been here, I’ve always felt welcome and taken care of. The employees are super kind and helpful. They also have a TON of really cool collectibles and events. Personally, I collect Pokémon cards and they have a huge selection of card. Whenever I go to other shops they either don’t have a lot of selection or are overpriced. Upkeep has reasonable prices on their cards and items. I always enjoy my visits there!" -Mirela D.
