When hearts come together to serve, lives are being touched through compassionate care and meaningful connection. 💙

The Askenasy #919 Surgical Mission brought volunteers together at Hilario Galindo Hospital in Retalhuleu, working alongside local healthcare professionals to serve patients with skill, compassion, and purpose.

Thank you to every volunteer who gave their time, expertise, and heart to this mission. Your willingness to serve helps make healing possible for families across Guatemala. 💛

A Mother’s Prayers. A Son’s Journey. A Renewed Hope. 💙

For 24 days, Derick Jarek Gomez’s mother prayed for her son to wake up.

A year ago, Derick, now 20, was hit by a car. He suffered a stroke and spent weeks in a coma. When he finally opened his eyes, his mother’s prayers had been answered, but both of their lives had changed. His ability to speak clearly was affected, and he could no longer work or return to the daily life he once knew.

At their home in a ravine, difficult terrain and limited accessibility left Derick spending much of his time in bed, with his mother caring for him each day.

Then, a wheelchair brought new possibilities. 💛

Now, Derick can spend time out of bed, connect with the world around him, and enjoy a greater sense of freedom. For his mother, the wheelchair helps her care for him and gives them more opportunities to share everyday moments together.

Through our partnership with Free Wheelchair Mission, Faith In Practice helps bring wheelchairs to families across Guatemala. Together, we connect these essential mobility aids with people who need them, helping individuals like Derick experience greater freedom and supporting the loved ones who care for them.

Their journey continues, but this gift has made a meaningful difference. For Derick and his mother, mobility means dignity, connection, and room for hope as they move forward together.

For Derick and his mother, being Known & Loved means having their needs seen and receiving care that brings dignity and hope. 💙

Let’s come together in faith and love so that more people can experience the care they deserve and know they are known and loved.

Some people serve with their hands. Others serve with their whole heart. Vilma does both. 💛

A local Faith In Practice volunteer from Poptún, Petén, Vilma is known for her gentle spirit, warm hugs, and deep compassion for others. She is a mother of two and grandmother of two, and her greatest joy is spending time with her family. Cooking together has become a cherished tradition and a source of livelihood for them.

Vilma’s calling to serve began while she was recovering from surgery. During that time, she felt drawn to care for patients with the same love and dignity every person deserves. When Juan de la Cruz, our volunteer leader in Petén, invited her to join the mission, she did not hesitate.

Four years later, Vilma remains deeply committed to serving others. In her spare time, she also volunteers at a nursing home, where she cooks for the residents and brings smiles to their faces.

For Vilma, service is more than a calling, it is compassion in action and a beautiful way to honor her father’s legacy.

Thank you, Vilma, for reminding us that a humble heart can make an extraordinary difference.
