At C4T, we believe one child experiencing harm or trauma is one child too many.

And every child deserves a safe path forward.

The conversation cannot stop with awareness.

As I have shared over the past week, the heartbreaking death of a 4-year-old Houston child has caused many of us to ask difficult questions about children caught in high-conflict family situations.

Those questions are important for our judges, attorneys, amicus attorneys, therapists, mental-health professionals and everyone who works within the family court system.

But there is another side of this conversation that we cannot forget:

The parents and families living through these situations every day.

Behind every court case is a child, a parent, a family—and often a tremendous amount of fear, confusion, grief and uncertainty.

At Children 4 Tomorrow, we believe awareness has to be accompanied by support.

That is why we have created a C4T Family Support Group, providing a place for parents and family members to come together, share their experiences, learn from one another and know that they are not alone.

The conversation needs to continue—not only in our courtrooms and professional offices, but also by listening to the families who are living it.

Children deserve to be heard, protected and supported.

The heartbreaking death of a 4-year-old Houston child has stayed with me.

But I don't want this conversation to disappear when the news cycle moves on.

When a child is caught in intense, ongoing parental conflict, the question cannot simply be, “Which parent is right?”

When a court knows a family is experiencing significant conflict and a major custody decision is made, what happens next?
- Is there a transition safety plan?
- Who is responsible for the physical exchange of the child?
- Has the supervising agency been notified?
- Are the attorneys, amicus, therapists and other professionals working from the same information?
- Are there known emotional or psychological concerns that should be considered?
- And is anyone looking beyond the immediate custody order to understand the dynamics surrounding the child?

A court order can determine legal custody. But the child still has to live through the transition. For those of us who work with children and families, perhaps this tragedy should cause us to examine not only how decisions are made, but also how we safely implement those decisions when the family is already in crisis.

This is not about assigning blame. It is about asking whether there are opportunities to do more before a child is placed in danger. Judges. Attorneys. Amicus attorneys. Mental-health professionals. Custody professionals. Supervised visitation providers.

What more can we do?

Because when the adults are in conflict, the child is the one living in the middle of it. And the child's safety has to remain at the center.

Children should never become the casualties of adult conflict. The conversation needs to continue.

My heart is broken for this little girl.
On September 29, 2026, in Houston, a heartbreaking story made the news: 4-year-old Vivian Savella was fatally shot in west Houston following a custody hearing earlier that day. Her family has described her as deeply loved, and she was expected to return to her father that evening.

As a mother, grandmother, and someone who has spent years working with children and families caught in some of the most difficult family situations, I cannot stop thinking about this precious child.

A child should never become the casualty of adult conflict.

My heart goes out to this little girl’s family and everyone who loved her. I also find myself thinking about all the children whose lives are being shaped by intense family conflict every day.

This is why the work we do at Children 4 Tomorrow matters so deeply to me.

This tragedy is a devastating reminder that some family court cases are far more complex—and far more serious—than they may appear on paper. Behind the pleadings and hearings can be trauma, fear, psychological abuse, domestic violence dynamics, escalating behaviors, safety concerns, and children experiencing significant emotional distress.

Understanding the severity of a family situation matters.

At Children 4 Tomorrow, we help courts and professionals understand what is happening, what may be driving the behavior, how it is affecting the child, and what services or interventions may be needed to move the family toward safety and healing.

Our role is not to tell a court which parent should “win.”

Our role is to provide clinical information, professional insight, and appropriate services in some of the most complicated family situations facing our courts.

And perhaps most importantly, we help professionals recognize:
A custody dispute is not always simply a custody dispute.

Sometimes the behaviors occurring within a family are signs of something much more serious.

What concerns were identified?
What risks may have been present?
What happens between a court hearing and the implementation of a new order?
How can we better protect children during those critical transitions?

These are the conversations that need to happen. Because the question should not only be:
“What does the order say?
”We also need to ask:
“What is happening to this child—and what does this child need to be safe?

We can change what happened her by taking this moment to strengthen our understanding and responding to family crisis.
