🎃 HALLOWEEN STORES ARE OPENING! Spirit Halloween

🇺🇸⚠️✝️ THE USA IS NOT A CHRISTIAN NATION! THE USA IS THE WORLD'S 1ST ATHEIST STATE COUNTRY

Between 1776 and 1783, thousands of captured American soldiers and sailors were packed into rotting British prison ships floating in New York Harbor.

The most infamous ship, HMS Jersey, became known as “Hell” among prisoners who survived it.

Men were crammed below deck with almost no ventilation, spoiled food, filthy water, rampant disease, and barely any medical care.

Witnesses described prisoners sleeping shoulder to shoulder beside the dead.

Bodies were reportedly removed every morning as disease ripped through the ships faster than battles did on land.

Historians estimate that around 11,000 Americans died aboard British prison ships during the Revolutionary War.

That number exceeded the roughly 4,500–8,000 Americans believed to have died in combat during the entire war.

Many prisoners were sailors, privateers, militia members, and captured Continental troops taken after battles like Long Island and Fort Washington.

Some prisoners accepted service in the British Navy just to escape starvation and disease.

Others refused and endured months or years trapped in floating prisons anchored just off Brooklyn.

For decades after the war, human bones reportedly washed onto Brooklyn shorelines from shallow graves near the prison ships.

The suffering became one of the darkest and least discussed chapters of the American Revolution.
