Itinerary for one of the best California road trips that you can take. As much as I love cruising down Big Sur and the coast, a drive through the Eastern Sierra and up into Northern California really makes for a one of a kind trip. Especially if you love the mountains.

Our trip, which we took last August, followed this basic route. We started around Bishop and Big Pine Lakes, then followed the Highway 395 corridor north, then northwest from Reno, hitting a handful of the incredible places and hikes along the way. It’s about 8-10 hours of total driving, so I’d recommend at least a week or more for this trip.

The highlights of this trip included:

-Big Pine Lakes
(-Schat’s Bakery, maybe the best stop of all)
-Mammoth Lakes Area
-Lake Tahoe
-Burney Falls
-Lassen Volcanic National Park

From there, we continued north into Oregon and Washington, but if you have the time, it’s really worth exploring Redwoods National Park and the Mount Shasta area, both of which are really beautiful as well.

Of all the road trips that we’ve taken in the past year, this trip through the Eastern Sierra and into Northern California was definitely one of the best. I can’t think of a better way or place to spend a few weeks in the summer months.
