On Saturday, October 31, the sun sets in Houston around 6:35. On Sunday, November 1, it sets around 5:34. π
Nothing about your building changes that weekend. What changes is who's walking to their car in the dark.
Our new article is a simple parking lot checklist for the time change: which light timers don't adjust on their own, what security cameras can and can't see at dusk, and the low-cost habits that help people get to their cars safely.

It's 2 a.m. One person is working the dock. They slip in a back stairwell and don't get up.
The cameras record it. Most of the time, nobody sees it until the morning shift shows up. π
Newer AI cameras can watch for a person lying on the floor and send an alert within seconds. But the camera has to cover the spot, and someone has to answer the alert. Our new article covers where these alerts help most, what they can't do, and seven questions to answer before you turn them on.

AI-Enabled Security Cameras: Detecting Falls and Enhancing Workplace Safety Newer AI cameras can alert you when a person falls or collapses. Here's how it works in Houston commercial buildings, what it can't do, and where to start.

Here's one that catches a lot of building owners off guard. π
In Texas, your camera system probably counts as an alarm system. DPS has published guidance saying that a company installing cameras that send or store images over a network fits the legal definition β which means most commercial camera work requires a Private Security Bureau license.
Fire alarm is a different agency entirely. That runs through the State Fire Marshal's Office at the Department of Insurance.
Two agencies, two license types, two free public search tools. Our new article walks through both, plus the seven questions worth asking before you sign a proposal β and the two annual city permits that belong to your building, not your vendor.

Who Licenses Security and Fire Alarm Companies in Texas? Two Texas agencies license this work, not one. Which covers cameras, which covers fire alarm, how to check your provider, and the permits that are on you.

"We get it inspected every year" is the answer most building owners give. It's usually true β and it's usually incomplete. π
Some parts of a commercial fire alarm system are on a three-month or six-month clock. Smoke detector sensitivity testing runs on its own two-year cycle. And a report that shows zero problems in an older building is worth a second look, because the devices nobody could reach often just don't make it onto the list.
Our new article lays out the real schedule, who enforces it in Houston versus unincorporated Harris County, and the six things a complete inspection report should contain.

How Often Does a Commercial Fire Alarm Have to Be Inspected in Texas? Houston-area fire code requires a yearly commercial fire alarm test, but not every part is on a yearly clock. The real schedule and who enforces it.

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, honor the heroes who showed extraordinary courage, and hold close the families and loved ones forever impacted by that day.
May we never forget the strength, unity, and compassion that brought our nation together. πΊπΈ

"We have 4K cameras" and "we can identify who did it" are two different things. π·
The gap between them is coverage width. A single 4K camera spread across a 60-foot open office puts about 27 pixels on each foot of the scene β enough to see that something happened, nowhere near enough to recognize a person. Two cameras aimed at the two doors would do far more good.
Our new post walks through how to actually spec an office camera system: the pixel math, how much storage 30 days needs, cloud versus on-premise, and ten questions to ask before you sign a proposal.

Harris County renewed a contract for 480 license plate cameras in May 2026. Guadalupe County, Hood County, Austin, and San Marcos ended theirs. Conroe residents want it on the November ballot. π€
Here's the detail that surprised us: most plate cameras around Houston aren't owned by the county or the city at all. Texas Tribune reporting from August 2026 found they belong to HOAs, MUDs, neighborhood associations, retailers, and private property owners.
So if you sit on a board or manage a property, this isn't someone else's debate. And the real question isn't the camera β it's who is allowed to search the data it collects.
New article covers where Texas stands, what you can actually choose, what no vendor can fix, and a checklist you can finish before the first camera goes up.

Think about the last person who left your company. π
Can they still get in the building?
Most facility managers say no right away β then they check the access control system and the answer changes. Badges from two years ago still active. A contractor card for a job that wrapped last spring. A card marked "TEMP-04" that opens everything and belongs to nobody.
It is not carelessness. Email shutoff is automated. Badge shutoff usually is not.
Our new post walks through the six-step audit that clears it out in an afternoon β and the three habits that keep it clean after that.

π A recent Gulf Coast retail theft case recovered more than 15,000 stolen items worth over $400,000 β from Academy, Ulta, Target, Home Depot, Walgreens and a dozen more. It took investigators 11 days.
Here is the part that stuck with us: they did not crack it with better cameras. They cracked it by connecting footage across stores and cities.
Our new article covers how these rings actually operate, why 63% of retailers never report most theft incidents, and the six gaps we see most often when we walk a retail site. Plus a free test you can run this week to see what your own footage would actually give a detective. π
