When heavy rainfall puts stormwater infrastructure to the test, the systems below the surface need to be designed and built to withstand demanding conditions.

A 2022 incident at the 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐬𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐡 𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧 highlights the importance of carefully considering the materials and design used in underground stormwater systems. A portion of the parking lot collapsed after a stormwater retention system was installed beneath it. Engineers and inspectors investigated the cause of the failure. The system was designed to hold approximately 177,000 gallons of stormwater.

The incident is a reminder that underground stormwater infrastructure may be out of sight, but its performance directly impacts the surface above and the communities that depend on it.

Recent incidents involving underground fires, along with documented failures of underground plastic stormwater detention systems, highlight an important consideration for engineers and project owners: 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬.

In its September 2024 Claim Reduction series, the 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 (𝐀𝐒𝐂𝐄) examined failures involving underground plastic stormwater detention systems and highlighted concerns related to the structural behavior of thermoplastics, including long-term deformation, or creep, under sustained loads. Those findings are an important reminder that underground systems must be evaluated not only for initial cost and installation, but also for how materials perform over time and under demanding conditions.

🚧 Case Study Spotlight: Pineville Business Park | Pineville, NC

The Pineville Business Park is another example of how the right storm drainage system can become part of a development’s long-term foundation.

For this North Carolina commercial development, Rinker Materials supplied reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) and flared end sections to support the site’s storm drainage needs.

The project included more than 13,800 linear feet of RCP, ranging from 15" to 72" in diameter, providing the scale and capacity needed to support stormwater management across the site.

On a project of this scale, drainage infrastructure has to do more than move water. It has to provide the structural strength, capacity, and long-term performance needed to protect roadways, property, and the investment being made above it.

The tour also highlighted the importance of finished product testing in evaluating different properties of concrete pipe and precast products. Depending on project requirements, testing may include Hydrostatic Testing to verify joint watertightness and the Three-Edge Bearing Test, which evaluates the strength of concrete pipe.

It was a great opportunity to showcase the care and attention that goes into each step of the process and to share how testing and quality control support the production of reliable concrete pipe solutions.
