This is the official page dedicated to Claude Charlier's Pop World Project Art. Americana was all the rage, and I fell for it in a big way.
I grew up in France - reading American comics, drinking Coca Cola and watching old Westerns. When I moved to Tokyo, I also fell in love with their animation and all the different types of soda and soda can designs that were sold in vending machines all over the city. In choosing to paint discarded objects I felt that I was giving them another life. Recycling not only their form, but also their imperfect beauty and the moments they were a part of someone's life.

In June 1976, I had the chance to meet Muhammad Ali & spend a week taking pictures with him. This photograph was taken in June 26 1976 at the Budokan hall in Tokyo.
Edition of 12 on heavy Baryta Vibrance Satin paper.

Coming up Friday on The Houston Hour, Mister McKinney and Heidi Vaughan are dedicating the whole show to Houston photography! Up first is Claude Charlier. Originally from France, he has lived and worked around the world and photographed some of the most interesting people of all time, including his friend Issey Miyake and Muhammad Ali. He’s been a magnet for creative people everywhere and now lives in Houston (perhaps you saw his Jose Altuve photos during the World Series!) and shows with HVFA!
