The transportation of goods across Texas was a major hurdle for our original settlers. After 1850, the Texas Central Railway officially began construction. Before the end of 1856, the city of Houston completed its first seven-mile line, known as the Houston Tap, to a junction with the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado.
I bet those original Houstonians didn’t anticipate being the precursor to a major U.S. city and port with over 4 million people today. We’re definitely still growing, but these railroads remain! Fun to look back on the history of what makes our dynamic city so unique.
