Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, in my friend’s home. (Then you can identify that it’s her unique passport and Diego’s 1930 drawing of one of his lovers) 🤯

Nick Cave is the leading figure among a new generation of post-funk artists working in Chicago; his brilliant and motley Soundsuits slice across vernacular art, assemblage, performance, and sculpture. Cave received a BFA at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1982 while also studying with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. After graduation, he attended North Texas State University, Denton, and received an MFA from Cranbook Academy in 1989. In 1990 he joined the faculty of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he is chair of the department of fashion design.
Cave burst upon the national scene with his first museum exhibition, Meet Me at the Center of the Earth, which was organized by the San Francisco Yerba Buena Art Center in 2009, and which continues to enjoy an extensive national tour, in Houston his work was seen last year at the CAMH's Hand+ Made: The Performative Impulse in Art and Craft. Public collections include MoMA; the Brooklyn Museum; Crystal Bridges; the Hirshhorn; the Museum of Art and Design, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Studio Museum in Harlem; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Seattle Art Museum; among others.
He has been recognized by awards from such organizations as Artadia, The Andy Warhol Foundation, the Joan Mitchell Foundation, and The Lewis Comfort Tiffany Foundation.

New Acquisition Alert!😊: Oluwole Omofemi, COURAGE, 2021
I haven’t yet met Oluwole but I ❤️ his work and his spirit. To quote him: Art has a functional role in society to correct vices.
I like it that ‘Oluwole’ is a Yoruba word that literally means “God has paid us a visit”. Oluwole may not be THE God but to me he IS an Art God!
Seen in the background: Anselm Kiefer, Gagosian Gallery, George Condo’s, Hauser & Wirth, Genesis Tremaine, Richard Beavers Gallery, Nedia Were, Mitochondria Gallery.

The ‘thing’ on the wall is a painting! The ‘thing’ sticking out his tongue is me! Painting is a self portrait by Angelbert Metoyer. Angelbert is a major artist and the two of us have been cruising through life together as friends for 25 years. Angelbert is based in Rotterdam and Houston and shows with Tripoli Gallery in the Hamptons. Now me. Well I am dressed in a one of a kind silk sport coat with one of Angelbert’s painting sewn into my jacket!

For this post I’m only speaking to the large painting. It’s by one of my very favorite artists, Jammie Holmes. Jammie paints his story, and the story of so many people of color. Growing up poor, in Thibodeaux, Louisiana, Jammie suffered through some of country’s worst racism. (Excuse me if I forgot that ‘systemic racism’ doesn’t exist in the U.S. 😂). His work is both strong and gentle, as in this work is the beautiful woman preparing for her 21st birthday, while a collage element of Emmet Till hangs above, Emmet who never reached his 21st, and we all know why. The tittle of this piece is CONTROL FREAK. 🫶🏼🤍🎨
