Hurricane categories describe a storm’s sustained wind speeds and the potential for wind damage.

The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale ranges from Category 1, beginning at 74 mph, to Category 5, with winds of 157 mph or higher. Category 3 and above are classified as major hurricanes.

No matter the category, every hurricane has the potential to bring dangerous conditions.

Knowing where to go and how to get there is an important part of your household’s emergency plan.

Review evacuation routes and identify an alternate route in case roads are closed. Make sure everyone in your household can evacuate safely, including anyone with limited mobility who may need extra assistance.

Power outages can make it more difficult to get in and out of your home, especially if you rely on an elevator or automatic garage door.

As part of your emergency preparations, know what options are available if the power goes out. Learn how to manually operate your garage door, and if your building has an elevator, familiarize yourself with your building’s emergency procedures.

Our thoughts are with everyone preparing for Tropical Storm Nolo, especially those still cleaning up and recovering from recent storms. We know it’s difficult to face another one so soon. Please take care of yourselves, check on your neighbors when you can, and follow updates from weather and emergency officials.

A Hurricane Watch has been issued for Hawai‘i Island. This activates hurricane coverage for Zephyr policyholders with insured property on the island, subject to the terms and conditions of your policy.

If your property is damaged, please make sure you and your family are safe first. When it is safe to do so, contact your insurance agent to report a claim.

A power outage can quickly create challenges at home, including keeping food at a safe temperature.

As part of your hurricane preparedness, keep a cooler, ice or frozen ice packs on hand. You can also freeze containers of water ahead of a storm to help keep your refrigerator, freezer or cooler cold longer if the power goes out.
