Bar None Records

Unified Field is out today.

Emperor X's most ambitious album yet, written and recorded largely in Ukraine, captures life, loss, community, and persistence through Chad Matheny's singular lens.

For nearly three decades, Chad Matheny has been creating music as Emperor X, carving out a singular space between indie rock and emo folk/punk. Written and recorded largely in Ukraine during an ongoing time of war, Unified Field is a deeply personal and politically charged collection of songs that reflects resilience and community. Matheny has been a longtime advocate for Ukraine, visiting the region multiple times, touring there in 2023 and housing refugees at his home in Germany.

ALBUM OUT NOW + TICKETS IN BIO

Expect an evening of live performances, special guests, and a proper celebration of the new album Beach Bongo Bloodbath!

June 15th - Doors at 7PM | Show at 8PM
Bowery Palace - 327 Bowery - NEW YORK, NY 10003

Beach Bongo Bloodbath is Bob Bert’s first true solo record; a record like you’ve never heard before. Listening from start to finish is like catching a DJ playing twisted versions of songs with broken turntables in the most unusual club you’ve ever stepped foot in. Yet, you can’t help but groove. Beach Bongo Bloodbath (Bert), fits perfectly alongside Mississippi Queen (Mountain), Pablo Picasso (Modern Lovers), Oink Oink (David Peel) and Four Enclosed Walls/Banging The Door (PiL).

HAPPY RELEASE DAY . Well I Mean is out now!!!

Sometimes you have to go back to the beginning to find a way forward. Well I Mean hearkens back to the messy feelings Brian managed to get down when he was starting out, as part of the Front Bottoms. But now Sella is a grown up. He’s still battling some devils and demons but with more tools and expertise at his disposal.

While the Front Bottoms continue to record and tour and are more popular than ever, Sella has also struck out on his own in an effort to keep things fresh.

“I’ve tried different hobbies over the years ,” he explains. “But ultimately the thing I always come back to is songwriting and story telling. It’s just something I have to do and I have to find new ways to do it.”

Happy release day to ! Known Associates has arrived! 🫨

“The more you know about music history, the more you know about music history in DC, the more you know about the state of the world, the more you’re going to find to latch onto in this record.” - NPR New Music Friday

A fever dream of Van Morrison-horns and Leonard Cohen sentiments, Known Associates is the LP which ratifies the steady rising reputation of Elizabeth Nelson as one of our insurgently crucial songwriters. Like her longtime hero Lucinda Williams (did you listen to her Passionate Kisses cover?), Nelson’s slow burn has run side by side with an ever-growing literary reputation. Known Associates is regal, ragtag and filled with the sort of hard luck stories, busted-up epiphanies and thrift store miracles that will be familiar to any fan of Richard Thompson, David Berman, or Tom Waits.
