If you take ONE thing away from everything we’ve shared this month, let it be this: Your child’s sleep isn’t random.

And you don’t need to memorize every wake-window chart or find the ā€œperfectā€ sleep schedule to understand it.

Start with the science. šŸ§ šŸ’¤

Your child’s circadian rhythm helps determine WHEN their body expects to sleep.

Sleep pressure builds the longer they’re awake and helps determine HOW READY they are for sleep.

Morning light and consistent timing help anchor their internal clock.

Naps release some of that sleep pressure—which is why a 10-minute car nap really can change bedtime.

Sleep needs change as children grow, which means schedules need to change too.

Consistency gives children the opportunity to learn what to expect.

And sometimes, when the schedule and sleep skills look good but sleep still doesn’t, we need to consider whether something beyond behavior could be affecting sleep quality.

That might sound like a lot of science.

But the practical takeaway is actually pretty simple:
Understand the WHY before changing the HOW.

Before you immediately move bedtime, drop a nap, change your response, or try a completely different sleep method, zoom out.

Look at the whole picture.

Because sleep is a system—not just a bedtime. šŸ’›

Your child sleeps 10+ hours every night. So they're getting good sleep…right?

Not necessarily.

There's a difference between sleep quantity and sleep quality.

A child can spend an appropriate amount of time asleep and still experience disruptions that make that sleep less restorative.

Here are 5 things worth paying attention to:
šŸ’¤ Regular mouth breathing during sleepļæ½
šŸ’¤ Frequent or loud snoringļæ½
šŸ’¤ Very restless sleepļæ½
šŸ’¤ Excessive sweating while sleepingļæ½
šŸ’¤ Daytime sleepiness or consistently seeming unrefreshed despite adequate sleep

Does noticing one of these mean your child has a sleep disorder?
No.

Kids get congested. Bedrooms get warm. Children move around in their sleep. An occasional occurrence isn't necessarily concerning.

What we're paying attention to are persistent patterns—especially when several of these signs are happening together.

And this is an important distinction:
As Sleep Specialists, we do not diagnose medical conditions.
But not every sleep struggle is behavioral.

Sometimes adjusting bedtime, changing a wake window, or working on independent sleep skills isn't the appropriate next step.

If you're regularly noticing these signs, document what you're seeing and bring it up with your child's pediatrician or healthcare provider. They can help determine whether further evaluation is appropriate.

Because healthy sleep isn't only about how LONG your child sleeps.
It's also about how WELL they sleep. šŸ’›

šŸ“Œ SAVE this so you know what to watch for.
šŸ“¤ SHARE it with another parent who may be focusing on hours of sleep without realizing that sleep quality matters too.

ā€œBut this schedule USED to work!ā€ 😩

We hear this all the time.

A child who was falling asleep easily suddenly starts taking 45 minutes at bedtime.

Naps get shorter.
Early mornings appear.
Bedtime battles start.

And parents immediately wonder:
What did we do wrong?

Usually, the better question is:
What changed?

Because your child’s sleep needs aren’t static.

As they grow and develop, their sleep needs, wake times, naps, sleep pressure, and even the amount of support they need can change.

Sometimes it’s developmental.
Sometimes they’re approaching a nap transition.
Sometimes that afternoon nap is now taking away too much sleep pressure from bedtime.
Sometimes schedules have slowly become less consistent.
And sometimes the schedule that worked perfectly a few months ago simply doesn’t fit the child you have today.

That’s why we don’t want parents blindly following a schedule just because it used to work.

Understand the WHY before you change the HOW.

Look at the whole picture. Make intentional adjustments. Give those changes time to work.

Your child didn’t forget how to sleep.
Their needs may have simply changed. šŸ’›

If you’re looking at your child’s schedule right now thinking, ā€œI have no idea what needs to change,ā€ that’s exactly what our Sleep Evaluation Calls are for.

We’ll look at what’s happening, help identify the likely cause, and talk through the best next step for your family.
