“I love you to the moon and back”

I loved a soul I never met
(but carried 13 weeks) and yet,
It was the hardest of goodbyes
I’ve said in all my years of life.
I don’t know what I’m mourning though,
despite my calling her a “soul.”
She had a heart (I heard it beat).
She had ten toes on little feet.
But did she have a little soul
that never got the chance to grow?
And will I ever get to know?

Book description:
What if the most powerful thing in the world was something you already had? In this warm and empowering picture book, young readers discover that their thoughts, words, and feelings are theirs to shape, and that’s a pretty amazing superpower.

From the way our thoughts become words, and our words become feelings, and our feelings become actions, I’m in Control of Me gently walks children through the connections inside themselves. Kids learn that all feelings are okay to have, but that they always get to choose what to do with them.

Perfect for little ones learning to manage their feelings, this book is a gentle guide to self-awareness, emotional regulation, and the empowerment that comes from saying: “I am in charge of me!”

Here’s my review of flour-based outdoor kids paint and how it compares with chalk paint.

Flour paint pros:

✅ Flour is cheaper and easier to find/use than grinding sidewalk chalk or finding sidewalk chalk powder.

✅ The colors were a little more translucent than chalk paint but still vibrant enough that the kids enjoyed using the paint

Flour paint cons:

❌ Flour + water = glue, so unless you do not care about your painting surfaces, skipping or delaying cleanup will make it harder to clean. Chalk paint turns back into chalk and brushes away easily once chalk paint is dry.

❌ The mess in the kitchen from making the paint was also harder to clean up than chalk paint. Some of it dried by my sink and it took a lot of scrubbing and soaking and scrubbing to clean up.

Here’s the rough recipe:

Mix all purpose white flour 🌾 with water 💦 until you have a consistency that is a little runnier than pancake batter. Then add as much pigment as you want. 🌈 I used a generous sq**rt of washable tempura paint. You could also use food coloring.

Why not just use tempera paint in the first place? Diluting it in a chalk or flour mixture is simply way more economical. Kids burn through a lot of paint in a short amount of time when painting outside. If you give them straight washable tempura paint, it will get expensive fast. 💰
