π³ Branching Out: Community Partner Spotlight
This school year, weβre celebrating the community partners who help Hickory City Schools students and families grow, learn, and thrive.
Our October spotlight is the Patrick Beaver Learning Resource Center β a valued HCS partner helping us Branch Out Through Literacy.
Through dedicated volunteers who work directly with students in our schools, literacy support for children and families, and training opportunities that strengthen our educators, Patrick Beaver is helping build stronger readers across our community.
π We are grateful for their continued investment in our students, educators, and the power of literacy!

An incredible group of educators spent time learning, growing, and adding powerful new tools to their teaching toolkit through Orton-Gillingham training at the Patrick Beaver Learning Resource Center.
And weβre not saying goodbye after training week! π Throughout the school year, weβll walk alongside this cohort as they put their learning into practice, continuing toward full certification as Orton-Gillingham classroom educators.
We canβt wait to see what happens when great teachers have great tools and the support to put them to work! β¨

Sight words don't have to be a mystery. π
We just wrapped up our 9-part Sight Words Made Simple series!
We covered what sight words really are, why they can be tricky to learn, how to make practice more engaging, and how to teach a sight word from start to finish.
The biggest takeaway?
Some children simply need more practice. π
Effective strategies + repetition + encouragement can make a big difference.
Want to see the strategies in action? π
π Head to our Sight Words Highlight to watch the full series!
Save this post as your quick-reference guide and share it with a parent or teacher who could use it. π

Letβs teach a sight word from start to finish! This is Part 2.
Watch as we finish our sight word lesson by moving from practice β memory β meaning.
First, we add texture! The student traces the word on an embroidery mat while looking at the large-print word:
π Out loud
π€« Whisper
π€ Silently
Then she spells the word on a marker board 3 times, saying each letter as she writes.
Next? Cover it up and spell it from memory. β¨
And finally, the most important step:
π¬ Put the word in a sentence.
Because knowing a sight word isn't just about recognizing or spelling it.
Meaning is the true measure of learning and understanding. π
Save Parts 1 & 2 to try this lesson with your reader!

What does it actually look like to teach a sight word? π
Letβs teach one from start to finish! This is Part 1.
First, we:
π€ Introduce the word
π£οΈ Sound it out
π Identify the βtrickyβ lettersβthe ones that donβt make the sound we expect
Then itβs time to SKY WRITE!
Have the student trace the letters in the air with straight arms and big movements:
π Out loud
π€« Whisper voice
π€ Silently
That big movement adds another sensory pathway to the learning process and gives the brain more ways to practice and remember the word.
And remember: Weβre not just memorizing a wordβweβre building a memory for how the word is spelled.π§ β¨
Stay tuned for Part 2 to see what comes next!
