Tonight! Join us from 6-9pm for the opening reception of “Khamsa”, a multimedia art exhibition showcasing 20 Black, Muslim, Immigrant, and Refugee visual artists and musicians traversing the five stages of grief.

“Khamsa” aims to address the different forms and contexts of grief, weaving both personal and universal experiences of loss. From the personal pain of losing a loved one, to the toll of Islamophobia and prejudice, Khamsa will draw in each and every one of us while bringing the stories and experiences of Black, Muslim, Immigrant, and Refugee artists to the forefront. This is a project to find harmony in our shared stories, bridging differences in cultures, beliefs, and history.

Tickets are sliding scale, and no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.

Opening Reception:
Tonight: September 2nd from 6 - 9 PM at Aggregate Space Gallery in Oakland for an evening of art and conversation. RSVP at artogether.org/khamsa

Dholak - 24”x36” - this is inspired by wedding events when women gather in a circle, a dholak (hand drum) is played, someone uses a spoon to tap a beat on it as well, and folk songs are sung. Everyone’s voices blend together. It’s a colorful affair!

Painting in progress! So this is an example of how the process of artistic experimentation leads one down unexpected paths. I had painted a wonderful light blue/white background and for weeks didn’t know what to do next. Finally inspiration struck and I painted for a couple hours until I felt I had something unique and amongst my best. Yet I had to make one last “fix”, and that spiraled out of control. So this painting is not that, just what came out as a side effect, and still needs some layers. Maybe I can recreate the magic again, but for now have to go down another path. I don’t think I’ll ever learn about the right moment to stop, I just have to accept the process for what it is.
