Before many people had heard her name, Claudette Colvin was making history.

In 1955, at just 15 years old, she refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus because she knew segregation was wrong. Her decision came at a personal cost. She was arrested, handcuffed, and faced criticism and isolation from some in her community. Yet she remained courageous and later became one of the plaintiffs in the court case that helped end bus segregation.

Today, we honor Claudette Colvin’s bravery and the sacrifices she made in the pursuit of justice. Her story is a reminder that meaningful change often begins with ordinary people willing to take extraordinary risks.

Today we honor the remarkable legacy of Charlotta Amanda Spears Bass—journalist, publisher, activist, and trailblazer. As publisher of the California Eagle, she used the power of the press to challenge discrimination, expose injustice, and advocate for equal opportunities in housing, education, employment, and voting.

In 1952, she made history as the first African American woman nominated for Vice President of the United States by a political party. Her courage, determination, and commitment to civic engagement helped pave the way for future generations of leaders.

Charlotta Amanda Spears Bass believed that every voice matters and that informed, engaged communities can create meaningful change. Her life reminds us that progress often begins with people willing to speak up, get involved, and work for a better future.

"Win or lose, we must do all we can to open the doors of opportunity."

😀Smile Day!

A smile is one of the simplest ways to connect with others. It can brighten a conversation, welcome a neighbor, and help build a stronger sense of community.

Today, share a smile with someone you meet. Small gestures can make a big difference.

🌕 Look Up This Weekend!💙

A rare Blue Moon peaks on Sunday, May 31, at 4:45 a.m. ET. Despite its name, it won’t appear blue. It’s called a Blue Moon because it’s the second full moon in the same month.

This year’s Blue Moon is also a micromoon, meaning it may appear slightly smaller and dimmer than usual.
