Faster ≠ Better. AI adoption in rehab is moving fast.
The harder question is whether clinics are evaluating these tools with the same level of rigor they’d expect from any other clinical intervention.
Because “AI-powered” can mean anything from simple automation to advanced movement analysis — and not all of it is supported by the same level of evidence.
As more AI tools enter rehabilitation, the ability to evaluate claims, measure outcomes, and ask better questions during demos will matter more and more.

❌ Objective testing isn't about proving you’re doing good work.
🔎 It's about catching what your eyes miss, documenting change clearly, and making sure patients don’t leave with deficits no one ever identified. Used well, objective testing leads to better decisions and better outcomes.
OTs are constantly walking the line when recommending adaptive tools:
🔽 Too little support, and the task isn’t safe.
🔼 Too much, and it takes away independence.
The goal is to help someone keep doing the activity on their own in a way that fits their life, their home, and their dignity.
Progression isn’t just increasing resistance, it's variation. Changing the grip, speed, or movement position alters motor strategy. That variability is what challenges the nervous system to adapt. Not just strength, but adaptable control.
OTs notice things most people don’t.
A slight shift in how something is held.
A subtle avoidance of a movement.
An activity becoming just a little more controlled.
Even when they’re standing back, they’re working.

This is what return to sport should look like: Objective testing and sport-specific drills to build confidence.

In a study of high-performance basketball players, researchers compared high-force eccentric training to traditional weight training. Both groups started with the same vertical jump height.
After six weeks:
✔️ Every athlete in the eccentric group finished with a higher vertical jump than the traditional group, with an average increase of 8%.
Muscles can produce 2–3x more force during the lowering phase than during lifting. That overload drives adaptations in strength and power, and improves the explosive phase that follows.
To increase power, we have to train the phase of movement where the greatest forces occur.

ACL injuries typically occur during deceleration: landing, cutting, stopping. If your strength training still prioritizes concentric over eccentric, you're missing the key to re-injury prevention. Isolating eccentric control builds the braking mechanism that protects the knees under load.
MVIC: One static push → objective strength data. With no movement to hide behind, MVIC isolates true force capacity, giving you a clearer picture of strength when precision matters.
