Remembering Greg Hodnett — Eight Years Later

Today marks eight years since the racing world lost Greg Hodnett, one of the most respected drivers ever to come out of Pennsylvania’s legendary sprint car scene.

Hodnett passed away on September 20, 2018, at 49 years old, following injuries sustained in a racing crash at BAPS Motor Speedway. His loss sent shockwaves through the sprint car community and left a void that has never truly been filled.

But Greg Hodnett's legacy is about so much more than the tragic circumstances of his final race.

A brilliant mechanical engineer and gifted race car driver, Hodnett combined technical knowledge with an incredible ability behind the wheel. He became one of the defining members of the PA Posse, earning more than 250 sprint car feature victories throughout his remarkable career.

His résumé included:

20 World of Outlaws A-Main victories
1993 World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year
22 All Star Circuit of Champions wins
73 victories at Williams Grove Speedway
Five Williams Grove track championships
52 wins at Port Royal Speedway
Four Tuscarora 50 victories
2020 National Sprint Car Hall of Fame induction

But ask the people who knew him, and they'll tell you the numbers only tell part of the story.

Hodnett was admired throughout the pits for his intelligence, humility, sportsmanship and the way he carried himself as a competitor. He was the kind of racer who could be fiercely competitive on the track while earning the respect of everyone around him.

His legacy continues through the Greg Hodnett Foundation, established by his widow, Sherry Hodnett, to provide financial assistance to families of race car drivers who lose their lives while competing at Central Pennsylvania tracks.

Eight years later, the PA Posse still remembers.

The fans still remember.

The racing community still remembers.

And Greg Hodnett's name still belongs among the greats.

Gone from the track, but never forgotten.
