Great news! 6th Annual Clean Sweep signups are officially OPEN! This year we're banding volunteers together to clean up litter across the city of Hampton, VA the morning of Saturday, April 25th, 2026!

Last year the Clean Sweep was historic. Our amazing volunteers doubled our cleanup area from the year prior, reaching 2.67 square miles (nearly 100 bags of litter was picked up in just 3 hours!). That impact proved we can do more than just one neighborhood... we can make a difference ACROSS THE ENTIRE CITY.

So in 2026 we’re going BIG... let’s band together citywide and make the biggest impact ever! Oh, and every volunteer gets our always popular FREE COMMEMORATIVE SHIRT!

✅ Individuals/small teams: Sign up here → https://form.jotform.com/253598204591161
✅ Groups of 10+ people: Churches, civic leagues, neighborhood watches, businesses, nonprofits, etc. — you’re encouraged to volunteer together! Groups of 10+ will have their logo on the back of the Clean Sweep shirt. Sign up here → https://form.jotform.com/260396424079160

WHAT TO EXPECT: We’ll meet that morning, get supplies, and head out to clean up our city together!💪 Tag your organization, tag your friends and family, start a team text thread, and claim your spot. It's a fun and easy way to get involved in something meaningful. We can do this folks!

Today in Hampton History
1843 - The schooner Perseverance receives its carpenter’s certificate and is enrolled at Norfolk and Portsmouth. The schooner was built on the Back River near Fox Hill by Thomas Dobbins. It was owned and sailed by William Phillips.

The Perseverance was most likely used for oystering and may have been sailed by a multi-racial crew, including enslaved sailors or oysterers. The boat was 51 feet, 40 60/95 tons, and had two masts and a square stern.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, shipyards in Hampton and Fox Hill built many schooners and other vessels used for fishing and oystering, and to transport farm produce and cargo to markets.
