Old houses hold stories—and some of them apparently never leave.

For Day 2 of Lindsey’s Old Houses After Dark series, she’s exploring one of Covington’s most fascinating historic properties: the Baker-Hunt House.

After the loss of her daughter, Margaretta Baker-Hunt developed an interest in spiritualism and psychic research—an interest that became part of the foundation she established here in 1922.

More than a century later, stories still surround the property, including an account of a woman in white reportedly seen watching from the staircase.

History, architecture, local folklore—and 29 more allegedly haunted historic places to go.

We’re only on Day 2, and there are plenty more old houses with stories to tell.

This 1920 Kentucky mansion feels like it was built for a Gatsby party.

600 Boone Avenue in Wi******er is packed with the kind of details that make old houses impossible to replicate — monumental columns, a dramatic staircase, ornate fireplaces, heavy trim work, tall windows, and rooms that still feel designed for entertaining.

It’s one of those homes where the architecture keeps revealing itself the longer you look.

You would think by the third floor this house would finally start feeling less grand.

It doesn’t.

At 904 Juliana Street, the details keep going — high ceilings, fireplaces, decorative plasterwork, original materials, and then a separate climb into the four-story tower overlooking Parkersburg.

That might be my favorite thing about this house: it never really stops revealing itself.

And after walking all the way through it, I completely understand why preservationists once wrote that Second Empire architecture “reaches its high point” here.

Almost 150 years later, you can still see exactly what they meant.

In 1977, preservationists studied an entire neighborhood of incredible historic homes — and pointed to this one.

They wrote that Second Empire architecture “reaches its high point” at 904 Juliana Street in Parkersburg, West Virginia.

And from the second you see the mansard roof, the four-story tower, the massive front doors, and that staircase, you start to understand why.

This house stayed in the same family for five generations, and so much of the original character is still here.

This is exactly why I drive hours to see old houses.

And somehow, there’s still more upstairs.
