If you are looking to add glass shelving to your home, there are actually many different types of glass available. Options include clear glass, frosted glass, rain glass, tinted glass, patterned glass, bronze glass, gray glass, and more.
If your home borders commercial areas or high traffic roadways, you know that noise is a problem. One way to help insulate your home against the external uproar is to use laminated glass in the windows. They provide the same benefits as traditional glass, but have better sound deadening capabilities.
One common type of glass used in commercial buildings is wired glass, where steel wire mesh is embedded into the glass. This type of glass not only provides reinforcement for security purposes, but also keeps fires from spreading.
“Window” actually means “wind eye” and originally referred to just the hole cut in the wall. Variations of the Latin word “fenestra” were adopted to identify a glass-covered wind eye. “Defenestration” was created as a term to describe what started the Thirty Years' War when Protestants tossed two Catholic representatives out the fenestra into the moat at the castle Hradshin in Prague in 1618. It means “to toss out the window.”
When you opt for a custom shower enclosure, there are many designs to choose from, such as frameless shower doors, sandblasted leaves designs, shower stall enclosures with a curved top and double glass screen, or a frameless shower door.
Have you ever thought that you’d get more business if only people could see into your shop? We’re always here to help you add large windows or a glass storefront to your business.
One type of stained glass is a narrative window, where panels tell a story. In churches, stories from the Bible are illustrated, while secular windows may use historical events as a subject.
If you want to add light to a room but still maintain privacy, consider using glass blocks. These can be used in a window casement, or as part of a wall between rooms. They let light pass through, but do not reveal what is on either side of the blocks.
Did you know that stained glass is often called leaded glass? In fact, there is very little difference between the two. The “lead” refers to the zinc, copper, and lead that hold the glass together. The term “stained glass” refers to the "stains" or colors of the glass.
The glass used in stained glass is colored by adding metallic salts. Copper produces blue or blue-green glass, cobalt produces blue glass, and gold can create wine-red and vilet glass. Copper can also be used to produce a vibrant red color.
Did you know that glass is not a true solid? Unlike true solids, where the molecules are ordered in a regular lattice, or fluids where the molecules are disordered and not rigidly bound, the molecules in glass are disordered but are rigidly bound.
