Today is the feast of St. Pelagia, a 4th or 5th century hermit.
In her youth, Pelagia was a glamorous woman of ill repute. During a city church council meeting, Pelagia rode by on her donkey and the bishop noticed her and pointed her out and told the other men that she took better care of her body than they did their souls and they should be ashamed. Pelagia heard this, and decided to go to hear the Bishop Nonnus's Sunday sermon. She was so moved that she decided to become a Christian herself and denounce her old way of life.
She did just that, and eventually sold all she had and moved to the Holy Land to become a hermit. According to legend, she took one of Nonnus's tunics and lived the rest of her life pretending to be a male hermit. It wasn't discovered by the people of Jerusalem that their "holy man" was really a woman until after her death.
St. Pelagia, pray for us!
