Rim Rock Drive isn’t just a scenic road—it’s a piece of Grand Junction history carved into the cliffs.

This 23-mile drive along the rim of Colorado National Monument was built largely in the 1930s–1940s, when New Deal programs put people to work during the Great Depression. Crews from efforts like the CCC and WPA drilled, blasted, and shaped a low-speed roadway into sheer sandstone—adding tunnels, hand-set stone guard walls, and overlooks that “design with the landscape” so each curve feels like it’s guiding you to the next jaw-dropping view.

Look closely as you go: many of those stone walls and masonry details are original, and the pullouts were purposely placed to frame the canyons, spires, and desert skyline. Keep your eyes on the cliffs too—bighorn sheep sightings are part of what makes this drive unforgettable.
