Yesterday, Genesee Fire Rescue trained alongside our partners from Foothills Fire & Rescue, Highland Rescue Team Ambulance District, and Indian Hills Fire Rescue on technical rope rescue.
Crews worked together to reach a "patient" on a steep, brushy slope, package them in a rescue litter, and bring them safely back up to the road with a rope system. Emergencies in the foothills rarely stop at district lines, so we often respond side by side with neighboring agencies. Training together builds the trust and shared skills that let us work as one team when it counts.
Thank you to all the crews who came out on a beautiful fall Saturday!
Some side hustles pay you. This one pays you back.
No experience needed. We train you, you earn certifications, and you show up for your neighbors alongside crews like these.

Update from the engine crew on assignment in Mesa Verde National Park.
The crew has been patrolling the park during most of the day and then acting as lookouts in the Park Point lookout tower in the afternoons as storms develop looking for lightning strikes.
They spotted and reported multiple small fires beyond the park boundary their first day. Yesterday the crew reported on strikes just within the eastern edge of the park and this afternoon smoke appeared from one of those strikes.
The crew hiked up the steep wooded slope with hand tools, a chainsaw, and a backpack worth of water where they found a single burning juniper with fire slowly spreading on the ground. The tree was cut down, cut into pieces, and contained. The crew monitored as the pieces burned to ash. They will repeat the arduous climb tomorrow morning to check that it is still secure and to add more water to any remaining heat they find.
They also responded to a minor medical emergency at the Cliff Palace earlier in the day.

Just about 52,000 acres to patrol.

Jefferson County has reduced fire restrictions from Stage 2 to Stage 1!
Fire Restrictions Update
Effective today, August 18, 2026, Jefferson County Sheriff Reggie Marinelli has rescinded the temporary Stage 2 Fire Ban and reinstated Stage 1 Fire Restrictions for all unincorporated areas of Jefferson County.
Despite recent monsoonal moisture we still have persistent drought conditions, along with dry vegetation and soils, which continue to create a risk of wildfire growth. Elevated national preparedness levels may also limit resources available for new wildfire incidents.
Please remember:
โข Denver Mountain Parks and Jefferson County Parks and Open Space remain under a year-round Stage 2 Fire Ban.
โข Restrictions on nearby municipal, county and federal lands may differ or change in the coming days and weeks.
For complete Stage 1 Fire Restriction details, visit the link in the first comment.

A somber reminder of the risks that come with the job.
Our heart goes out to our brothers and sisters with West Metro during this difficult time.
UPDATE: This morning, West Metro crews were conducting high-angle rescue training in a steep, rocky area near Morrison, west of C-470, when Firefighter/Paramedic Jarrod Leonard fell approximately 50 feet.
Jarrod sustained critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
Jarrod has served the West Metro community for more than 23 years and is one of our technical rescue instructors, helping train firefighters in the specialized skills needed to perform rescues in some of the most challenging environments.
Jarrod remains in critical condition and is receiving ongoing treatment and evaluations.
