Bat Appreciation Month!

We have 8 wonderful bat species in the Chicagoland area.

Our local bats are all insectivores and use echolocation to maneuver in flight and locate insects to eat.

Bats here don’t grow much bigger than house sparrows or robins. Their wingspans are from around 9.5 to 15 inches with the tri-colored bat being the smallest and the hoary bat the biggest.

Some species like the little brown bat, big brown bat, and evening bat are social. They roost in groups. Others like the hoary bat and silver-haired bat are solitary species.

Bats are active in our area now. Take note if you’re out at dusk or night. Look up in the area of street lamps and see if you can spot one flying around. With expert flying skills, they make sharp turns and fly fast!
