Volunteer Fire Department seated in Adams County. Gettysburg's first "non-hand power" engine, a Silsby Steam Fire Engine, arrived in 1886.
Operating 2 Engines, 1 Rescue, 1 Ladder Truck,1 Traffic Unit, and various support vehicles to respond to over 700 fire/rescue calls per year. The Gettysburg Fire Department, located in Adams County Pennsylvania, has a long and proud history of public service to the community of Gettysburg and the surrounding areas. The first fire protection in Gettysburg was provided by a bucket brigade in accordance with mandatory action by town council in 1806. In 1808, in addition to the existing bucket brigade, an engine company, an ax company, and a ladder company were formed. Named the "General Meade," the Silsby can still be seen today in the department's museum. The first motorized engine arrived in 1912 and the first aerial ladder truck, a 55' 1888 Hayes with a wooden manual raised ladder was purchased on April 2, 1925. The department has since grown to handle more than 700 fire/rescue calls and 2000 ambulance calls per year. It protects approximately 25 square miles covering a population of 20,000 with 30 volunteer firefighters operating two engines, one truck, one heavy rescue, a traffic unit, support vehicles and 1 boat. The department protects 90% of the Gettysburg National Military Park and celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2008.

It is with sadness that the GFD share the passing of Gettysburg Fire Department Life Member Robert Reecher, who passed away on Thursday, September 29th.
Services for Robert will be private and held at the convenience of the family. If any additional information becomes available, it will be passed along to the membership.
Please keep Robert’s family, friends, and fellow members of the Gettysburg Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

OVERTURNED VEHICLE WITH ENTRAPMENT – YORK ROAD
Today 9-21-26 around 1530 hrs., the GFD and Adams Regional EMS were dispatched to the area of 3080 York Road for a reported single-vehicle accident involving an overturned pickup truck into a tree.
Deputy Chief 1 arrived in the area of Coleman Rd & York Rd , updated from the initial location and confirmed the vehicle's sole occupant was trapped, upgrading the assignment to an MVC with entrapment and bringing additional resources to the scene, UH&L Rescue 33 & E33-3.
Rescue 1 & 33 crews stabilized the vehicle, removed the roof, and utilized hydraulic rescue tools to free the patient, whose arm was trapped beneath the driver's door. The patient was then carefully removed and transferred to EMS for continued treatment.
Aeromedical transport was initially requested; however, the responding helicopter was forced to abort due to mechanical issues. The patient was then transported by ground to the hospital.
Thank you to Adams Regional EMS, United Hook & Ladder Co. 33, Pennsylvania State Police, Fire Police from Co.'s 1, 33 & 22 and all personnel who assisted with the incident.
Route 30 was closed for approximately 1.5 hrs. in the area while units worked the scene.
Deputy Chief 1 held the York Road Command.

It was a busy day along the York Road corridor for the Gettysburg Fire Department, with crews responding to three separate incidents in nearly the same area.
At 0823 hours, GFD and Adams Regional EMS were dispatched to York Road & Shealer Road for a multi-vehicle accident. Chief 1 arrived, established York Road Command, and reported minor injuries. Fire Police remained on scene assisting PSP with traffic control until the roadway was cleared.
At 1756 hours, crews were back on York Road for another multi-vehicle accident, this time at Natural Springs Road & York Road, just down the road from the morning's accident. Chief 1 arrived to find two vehicles involved, two minor injuries, and the roadway partially blocked.
Then, less than an hour after clearing the second accident, crews were dispatched right back to the same area for a reported vehicle fire impinging upon a structure at the Gettysburg U-Haul on York Road—only a few hundred feet from the second accident.
Communications advised responding units that a motorcycle was reportedly on fire inside the rear of a U-Haul truck.
Chief 1 arrived, established York Road Command, and reported a well-involved U-Haul truck, with the fire impinging upon a second U-Haul but no involvement of the nearby structure.
Engine 1-2 deployed the front bumper line and made quick work of the fire, containing it to the original U-Haul with only minor exterior damage to the second truck. The motorcycle was a total loss as it was the origin of the fire.
The incident was held to E1-2, E33-3, Truck 1, and Fire Police, with units operating for approximately 30 minutes.
Three incidents. Two vehicle accidents. One vehicle fire. All within approximately a half-mile along York Road.
