How exciting!! Our Georgetown County First Steps 3K classes can’t wait to meet our very own Gold Medalist and the fastest woman in the world—and we’re especially proud that she calls Georgetown County home!
What an incredible opportunity for our youngest learners to meet a champion from their own community and see firsthand that greatness can come from right here at home!
Georgetown County School District is excited to welcome Track & Field Olympian and World Champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden to ALL of our elementary and intermediate schools!
Melissa will visit schools September 24–30 and October 6–9. We are thrilled to provide our students with the opportunity to meet Melissa, hear about her journey, and learn from her experiences as an Olympic athlete and World Champion.
As a Georgetown County native, Melissa’s story is a powerful reminder that big dreams can begin right here at home!
We look forward to welcoming Melissa back to and celebrating the connections, opportunities, and lasting IMPACT her visits will create for our students!

Come on Georgetown County School District, City of Georgetown, Town of Andrews, Georgetown County.
Melissa Jefferson- Wooden has won Olympic gold medals, she’s the fastest in the world in the 100 meters and now the third fastest in the world in the 200 meters.
And there is nothing in Georgetown County named in her honor.
We have streets and sports facilities and many other things named after many many other people.
But none with her name on it.
Please, do something to rectify that.

Some of our HIPPY(4K children) children! I love this……Little Smurf rocks!
There is such a beautiful connection and correlation between our youngest learners and our senior population. Both generations have so much to teach, share, and learn from one another.
With that being said, I am encouraging our childcare providers to create opportunities for children to build meaningful relationships with some of our seniors—many of whom have helped raise us, nurture us, teach us, and pour so much love into their families and communities.
Let’s teach our children the importance of honoring our elders, showing kindness, giving back, and appreciating those who have given so much of themselves to others.
Sometimes, a small gesture can bring the greatest joy. A handmade card, a drawing, a visit, a song, a smile, or simply spending time together can mean the world to someone.
Let’s encourage our children to be a gift and bring joy to those who have spent their lives giving so much to us and to our communities. Without them, their would be no us!

Georgetown, it has been far too long, but this is something our community truly needs. We are excited to see this come together and are grateful for everyone working to support and uplift our families.
Georgetown County First Steps (GCFS) will be there to help support families across Georgetown County as well! Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our children and families.

Please help me welcome Ms. Laquanda Armstrong to the Georgetown County First Steps team!
Since joining our team, Ms. Armstrong has already made a tremendous impact. She came in ready to work, took initiative, and has been getting things handled and taken care of. She is truly a go-getter with a great work ethic and a willingness to jump in wherever she is needed.
We are excited to have her as part of our team and look forward to all she will contribute to Georgetown County First Steps.

Our very own Sherill Walker-Smith, HIPPY Supervisor for Georgetown County, is always willing to step up and help wherever she is needed—even when the support extends beyond our own county. She is truly an asset to our team: a self-starter, quick thinker, and dedicated professional who brings years of valuable work experience and education to everything she does. We are grateful to have someone who is always willing to go above and beyond to support others and strengthen the work we do.

The countdown to the opening of our 3K classrooms for the 2026–2027 school year has officially begun!
Many people will never know how hard I had to fight to ensure this program continued after seven years of proven success. Through unwavering dedication, strong partnerships with our school district, and measurable outcomes that have positively impacted children and families, we refused to give up.
Today, I’m proud to say—we made it!
Here’s to another year of preparing our youngest learners for a bright future. Thank you to everyone who believed in our mission and stood with us along the way. Thank you GCFS board for believing in me and the vision. The best is yet to come!
