Remember, the place where water appears inside your home is not necessarily where it entered the roofing system.

Water can enter through damaged shingles, exposed nails, flashing, valleys, pipe boots, vents, chimneys, skylights or areas where the roof meets a wall. Once beneath the roofing materials, it may travel along the decking, rafters, pipes, wiring or insulation before dripping onto the ceiling. This means a visible water spot could be several feet away from the actual opening.

The timing of the leak can also provide important clues. A leak that appears during heavy wind-driven rain may come from a different location than one that develops during steady rainfall. In some situations, the moisture may be related to plumbing, HVAC condensation or inadequate attic ventilation rather than the roof itself.

That is why simply repairing the shingles directly above a ceiling stain may not solve the problem. A roofer should inspect the roof surface, flashing, penetrations, attic and surrounding components to trace the water back to its actual entry point.

When possible, document when the leak begins, how hard it is raining and whether wind is involved. This information can help narrow down the source. Finding the true entry point is the first step toward making the correct repair and preventing additional damage.
