Picture this dramatic scene: Delaware's fate in the Continental Congress hangs in the balance, and one man's midnight ride changes American history forever.

Caesar Rodney, born on a farm east of Dover on October 7, 1728, became one of Delaware's most distinguished statesmen. This Camden marker honors a man whose public service began early and spanned decades. He served in the Colonial State Assembly, attended the Stamp Act Congress, and represented Delaware in the Continental Congress from 1774 through 1776.

In 1776, Rodney received an urgent summons from his home to Philadelphia. Delaware's delegation was deadlocked on a crucial vote, and only he could break the tie. His dramatic arrival added Delaware to the states approving the Declaration of Independence. Later commissioned Brigadier-General of the Delaware Militia during the Revolution, he served as Delaware's President (Governor) from 1778 to 1781. Rodney died at his Dover-area home on June 29, 1784, remembered for his integrity and patriotic leadership.
