Walter Parazaider, Founding Member of Chicago, Dies at 81

June 17, 2026 — Walter Parazaider, a founding member of the legendary rock band Chicago, has died at the age of 81 following a six-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease, according to multiple reports and statements from his family.

Parazaider, a saxophonist, flutist, clarinetist, and one of the architects behind Chicago’s signature horn-driven sound, passed away peacefully while receiving hospice care. His wife, JacLynn Parazaider, confirmed that he had been battling Alzheimer’s disease since 2020.

Born in Maywood, Illinois, Parazaider helped form the group in 1967 alongside fellow musicians including Terry Kath, Danny Seraphine, Robert Lamm, James Pankow, Lee Loughnane, and later Peter Cetera. His vision of combining rock music with a powerful horn section helped create one of the most successful bands in American music history.

Parazaider’s musicianship became a defining element of Chicago’s sound. Fans will remember his iconic flute solo on “Colour My World” and his saxophone work on “Just You ‘n’ Me.” The band went on to score numerous chart-topping hits, including “If You Leave Me Now,” “Hard to Say I’m Sorry,” and “Look Away.”

After decades of touring, Parazaider stepped away from the road in 2017 due to health concerns and publicly revealed his Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2021. He remained a beloved figure among fans and fellow musicians.

Chicago paid tribute to its co-founder, praising his vision, leadership, and the role he played in bringing the band together. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, cementing Parazaider’s place in rock history.

Walter Parazaider is survived by his wife of 59 years, JacLynn, and their two daughters, Laura and Felicia.

“His greatest gift may have been bringing people together through music.” — Chicago tribute statement.
