The Town of Garner, NC Government and Downtown Garner Association are looking for local groups to take the stage (well… technically, Main Street 😉) during Light Up Main on November 28!

Whether you’re a local dance troupe, choir, band, theater group, cultural organization, school group or church group, we want to see what you’ve got!

🎶 Bring the music.
💃 Bring the moves.
🎭 Bring the creativity.
✨ Bring the holiday spirit.

Each selected group will receive a 15-minute performance slot, with lighting and sound provided. We’re looking for performances that are creative, energetic, family-friendly and help celebrate the diversity and spirit of our community.

And yes… there’s an audition. 🎬
Groups must submit a video audition, along with a performance description, number of performers, technical needs and a photo of the intended costume.

📅 Applications close: October 16
🎥 Audition videos + costume photos due: October 23

So gather your crew, rally your troupe, round up your ensemble and bring your talent to Main Street!

Downtown Storytelling: 🚂 ALL ABOARD! Let Me Tell You My Story…

Well, hello there. I’m X771.

You may know me as the little red caboose beside the Garner History Museum at the Historic Depot. But I’ve been around a lot longer than you might think.

I was born in 1950 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, built by the Garant Corporation for the Norfolk and Southern Railway. I was one of Southern Railway’s M930 bay-window cabooses, and for decades, I did what cabooses do best; I rode the rails and helped keep an eye on things from the back of the train.

I saw a lot of miles. A lot of towns. A lot of sunsets.

And then, in August 1990, my journey took a turn.

Instead of heading off for another trip down the tracks, I came to Garner. The railroad donated me to the town with the hope that I could become an educational exhibit, and thankfully, my story didn’t end there.

Garner gave me a home.

In December 2019, I made one more BIG move, coming to my current spot beside the Historic Depot. I’ll admit, after all those years on the railroad, it was nice to finally stay put.

But staying put doesn’t mean standing still.

For years, the Garner Area Historical Society worked to restore me, preserve my story and make sure future generations could experience a little piece of Garner’s railroad past. And this summer, my restoration was completed.

After 76 years, I’m looking pretty good for an old caboose. 😉

Now I’m ready to welcome visitors inside again and share stories of the railroad, the people who worked on it, and the role it played in shaping Garner.

And guess what?

You can come aboard. 🚂

So come see me. Walk through my doors. Take a look around. Ask a question or two.

I’ve spent more than seven decades watching the world go by.

Now it’s your turn to climb aboard and see Garner’s story from my point of view.
