How am I supposed to feel happy about things when life gets tough? Some of my friends are in the hospital close to death. A pipe in my house hidden away in the wall sprang a leak. My hardwood floors were ruined. The aches and pains of too many birthdays have resulted in numerous trips to the doctor and rehab—trips I’d would have rather not have taken. The Bible says I’m supposed to feel happy about that?
Maybe not happy, but joyful. The Lord says to have joy in every circumstance. That seems to defy all human logic.
But then God doesn’t operate using human logic.
What?
Yes, that’s right. His ways are higher than mine.
So how can I have joy in the midst of adversity.
God commands it. He’s not going to tell us to do something we aren’t capable of. If joy occupies my mind and heart, how much better than falling under the spell of desperation. If I truly trust the Lord to work in my life, then I don’t need to look at the circumstances but what God says and does.
