Use your senses - sight, touch, hearing are valuable tools to every inspector! This violation was found under the truck, so a mechanic would more than likely be the one to identify the problem. However, there are many fasteners on a truck tractor many that can be checked by a driver. The bottom right fastener in this video has left a "clean" ring on the frame indicating there may have been movement. By touching each fastener, the inspector confirms all 4 fasteners were loose. You can also hear the movement of the fasteners in this video.

Reminding everyone safety is a shared responsibility. This loose steering gear box was found at a terminal by a Motor Carrier Specialist I. This is easiest to check with a driver and an assistant. When the driver rocks the steering wheel back and forth, the steering gear box should not move. Loose steering components are an out of service condition but could also be catastrophic to a driver on the road.
Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations 393.201(a) The frame or chassis of each commercial motor vehicle shall not be cracked, loose, sagging or broken. - The frame in this video taken by a Central Division Motor Carrier Specialist is not only in violation but is also out of service.
